If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
Brilliant and touching
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
This is a highly underrated comedy! It has a great cast and some really hilarious scenes. Billy Bob Thornton is great as always, and Jon Heder fits his role really well. This movie has a pretty unbelievable cast altogether, so many good supporting actors. Michael Clarke Duncan from The Green Mile, David Cross from Arrested Development, Paul Scheer from The League, Sarah Silverman, Ben Stiller, and so many more people you will recognize. I'm pretty disappointed that this has such a low rating. I think it's one of the better comedies that came out of the 2000's. It's similar to Anger Management with Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson. I would recommend this movie for sure.
In New York, dorky loser Jon Heder (as Roger Waddell) gets pushed around at work. And, he can't pick up flirty Australian neighbor Jacinda Barrett (as Amanda Richards). Taking a friend's advice, Mr. Heder enrolls in a self-confidence class run by ballsy Billy Bob Thornton (as "Dr. P."). Then, after Heder learns how to "roar like a lion" and live dangerously enough to attract Ms. Barrett, he finds Mr. Thornton becoming a rival for her affection.A gay subplot involves Thornton's burly henchman Michael Clarke Duncan (as Lesher), who turns out to be sodomizing Thornton's students. One traumatized rape victim, Ben Stiller (as Lonnie Ratcliff), shows up with revenge on his mind. The tennis match damage inflicted on Thornton, and the sock stuffed in Heder's mouth are two highlights. But, director Todd Phillips' "School for Scoundrels" never rises above the usual sophomoric chuckles.*** School for Scoundrels (9/29/06) Todd Phillips ~ Jon Heder, Billy Bob Thornton, Jacinda Barrett, Ben Stiller
Do you like Billy Bob Thornton? How about the many wives he has had? His movies? All the above? Well, this movie is probably for you. Instead of being a mall Santa or flying into space, he runs a "class" for loveless losers and takes their money. Problem is, some people like John Heder get too good.So Billy Bob proceeds to try to win over his woman (Jacinda Barrett) and starts an all out war with Heder. Things get a little crazy and some of the things that happen are quite hilarious, although its not always a 'laffer' at some points. And how Michael Clarke Duncan got involved beats me. But at least he is shown some love in this movie.Overall, not bad. I like the acting in this one. "B"
"School for Scoundrels" tells the well worn story of a pushover who learns to become more assertive so that he can take charge of his life and finally get the girl. I didn't realize that the film was a remake but the fact that I found it hackneyed to begin with gives an idea of the level of originality we're dealing with here. The cast contains a number of talented and funny individuals but they are unfortunately let down by the material. Looking at the cast list it's difficult to believe that the film is as mediocre as it is. The script just doesn't deliver the goods comedically and the story's too unoriginal to grab your attention. The technical aspect is no better than average either but I must admit that the soundtrack was pretty nifty. In the end, I can only recommend this flick if you're absolutely starved for some comedy. There's little to be had here though those who don't mind clichéd stories may appreciate it more than I have.
