The acting in this movie is really good.
Ten years previously Ray Quick and Ned Trent worked together; Ray rigged bombs and Ned triggered them. The worked for the CIA targeting some very dubious characters but had a falling out when Ned wouldn't abort a mission because there was a child in a drug dealer's car. Afterwards Ray sees to it that Ned no longer works for the CIA.When May Munro was a child she witnessed the murder of her parents at the hands of Tomas Leon, son of Miami drug lord Joe Leon, and two of his henchmen; now she want to hire Ray to take them out as he specialises in hits that only take out the target not innocent bystanders. Initially he declines but as he sees her putting herself in danger he accepts the job. It won't be that easy though; after the first target is taken out Joe Leon employs Ned to find the killer; he also bribes a corrupt police chief to make Ned lead the investigation into the killing. As Ray closes in on his targets it becomes apparent that May might not have been as trustworthy as first appeared; she may be using Ray to get her revenge but Ned is using her to draw Ray out so he can get his revenge. This might not be a classic of the genre but it contains enough enjoyable material to make it worth watching. The story is a bit cliché and there aren't too many surprises but the action is solid and there are plenty of impressive explosions which lead to some inventive deaths for the bad guys; most notable when an overhanging hotel room is blown up and collapses into the sea, landing on a thug who had already been blown through the window. We also get an entertaining fight scene early on where Ray deals with some yobs on a bus. While the cast aren't on top form they are certainly good enough; Stallone is solid as Ray and Sharon Stone brings some sexiness to the role of May. However it is James Woods who steals the show as Ned; he may be a bit of a pantomime villain but he is still entertaining in an over the top way. Overall I'd say that this is worth watching if you are a fan of the genre or of Stallone films.
*Could be a spoiler or two* My ONLY problem with the whole movie was James Woods! Nobody, I mean NOBODY ... goes around flaunting laws and rules and treating every single person he comes into contact with, like garbage. Another thing ... Eric Roberts' character is insanely jealous, to the point that he sees Stallones character looking into his car, he immediately jumps out and threatens Stallone with all types of bodily injury, (even pulling a knife on Stallone in wide open public), yet, a li'l bit later, in his mansion, he walks into a room where Woods has just slapped the "ca-ca" out of Stone's character (meaning, she would obviously have a hand print on her face, or a bruise, or black-eye, or SOMETHING), and Roberts does or says absolutely nothing! But, back to Woods. He treats the bomb crew like rookie desk clerks, and no one says anything or calls him on it. He even makes a li'l "pen-bomb", and activates it in the bomb squad room, daring the bomb squad leader to deactivate it it in less than 10 seconds ... and he gets away with it (yeah, right)! But, other than Woods, this is actually a good, entertaining movie. Plenty of action, lots of explosions, even a very uncomfortable-looking shower sex scene! This is a movie where just about everyone that you want to see blown up, gets blown up!
A woman entices a bomb expert she's involved with into destroying the mafia that killed her family. The Specialist is probably one of Stallone's smartest films because i love how he could make a bomb out of anything and the way he killed some of his targets was pretty cool to say the least and as far as performances go both Stallone and James Woods were really good the same goes for Sharon Stone as well and the rest of the cast does a nice job with the material that was given to them. Although if you expect the typical punches and gun fights from previous Stallone movies you will be disappointed i mean they are there but not as much as maybe you would hope. Another problem i found was the lack of a great villain because if you see previous Stallone films such as Demolition Man or even Rocky IV you will see that the villains were very dangerous and ruthless in here both James Woods and Eric Roberts are just there to throw threats that's all and some of the dialogue was pretty meh at times like that moment when Roberts came face to face with Stallone and threat him or even when Woods treated like garbage to pretty much everyone he came across to, also there's a scene where the green screen is pretty easy to spot and it kinda ruins the scene and at times the whole thing with the explosions gets a bit over the top but if you sit back and watch this and be open minded you will definitely enjoy it it's a really cool and sexy action thriller with some pretty clever directed action sequences and even funny at times and in my opinion the Rotten Tomatoes score about 'The Specialist' is simply a joke i mean common a 4% and Batman & Robin has a 11% or Fan4stic with a 9% are you seriously telling me that this movie is worse than those 2 films that i just told you about? No absolutely no if you watch the audience reviews you will see a far better response, never trust the critics always trust your opinion and if you hated it that's alright besides Stallone made far better films after this one such as Cop Land and Assassins. Anyways to wrap this up if you can pass on the problems that the film has you will not be disappointed it's smart, it's funny and it has some pretty good action here and there my final rating is an 8/10.
Sylvester Stallone is an explosives expert who contracts out his work after leaving the CIA when his superior James Woods callously killed some innocents on a South American job. Stallone before he left the agency got the demented Woods canned. Both are at large now, Stallone is an independent Woods just a loose cannon.Sharon Stone hires Stallone because of his precision hits with explosives, not an easy thing to do. She wants three Cuban gangsters killed as they killed her parents while she as a child watched. One of the three is Eric Roberts the son of Cuban Mafia capo Rod Steiger.Wouldn't you know it Woods is now working for Steiger and he's got his own agenda. He recognizes Stallone's signature and Steiger who has the Miami PD bought and paid for go to work assisting Woods track down Stallone. As for Stone she has her own agenda as well. But is gets nice and personal with Sly and Sharon.Stallone fans should be pleased with The Specialist. It has enough explosive charm for anyone who likes to see things go boom. As for acting honors they go to James Woods who has a knack for playing deranged and callous characters. A villain you love to hate. One might become a Stallone fan after seeing The Specialist.
