I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
I believe that casting has a huge part on creating a good movie, that was not one of the cases. Jason Segel?! Really? The boring neighbour who never says anything interesting, the one who talks about the new taxes laws or the weather? No empathy at all with him, all the scenes with him gives me the will to have a break and go check my Instagram. The weirdo brother... Jesse Plemons, boring and very bad acting, please, how interesting would be with Jeremy Davies, the real weirdo-intelectual (!)? It could be an interesting movie, with good actors.
The beautifully directed and acted movie sends out a powerful message with the implication that suicide is not the way to reach an afterlife, which is indeed an alternate reality from our own reality, where we get a second chance to correct our mistakes. A thorough exploration and masterful presentation makes the movie a masterpiece.
The Discovery is a movie starring Robert Redford, Jason Segel and Rooney Mara and it tells a story about a man who discovered the proof of afterlife which boosted up the number of suicides. Still, he's looking for more answers and to see further regardless of the suicides and his son's opposing. It's a great concept and I loved how the movie started with a haunting atmosphere, good performances and it all looked very interesting. Then it just refuses to look beyond and just wastes the concept by turning into a black comedy with some drama. The ending was pretty good again, but it just doesn't feel as grasping as the beginning. With this, I had the same problem that I had with a lot of Netflix original movies: I just couldn't help but feel like there was more to the whole story. Like that's not all, like there was meant to be more in the mix, but was cut. The movie is still not boring. It's still interesting enough and backed up by some good performances, but I just didn't like where it was going. How low it was aiming. And it could have been so much more. The ending is satisfying enough and the twist works well, but the story is a lot smaller than its concept and that's what makes this movie just kinda decent.Another good concept gone to waste. It's not bad, but the story didn't deserve its concept.
The premise for this movie was really interesting, which is why I decided to watch it. However, the plot was really lacking in the imaginative details I was hoping for. We never hear any stories about the afterlife, or see the afterlife, or learn about how it was discovered. The characters spend the whole movie trying to film what they think is the afterlife, only to disprove the main plot line in the process. We just end up with an anticlimactic story line and an unnecessary love story that did nothing for the overall film. It's only purpose was to give the main character a reason to keep living in a time loop of what was primarily a very mundane moment.
