Very disappointing...
Fresh and Exciting
It's an amazing and heartbreaking story.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
The front cover of my DVD for Demonic Toys (Film 2000 Shock Horror Collection) states that 'special effects wizard David Allen brings Toulon's killer puppets magically to life'. In reality, Allen's FX contribution is fairly negligible and Toulon (from the Puppetmaster series) has jack all to do with this particular movie.Similarly misleading is the one (mis)quote on the sleeve from roberthood.net (no, me neither), which describes Demonic Toys as boasting 'breast-focused nudity', which it doesn't really: there's a two second shot of a topless woman—hardly what you would call Russ Meyer/Andy Sidaris territory.Despite the distributor clearly feeling the need to deceive people into buying the film, Demonic Toys isn't all that awful; in fact, as trashy low-budget B-movie horrors go, this one is actually pretty entertaining, with a reasonable amount of invention (the script written by David S. Goyer of Batman Begins and Dark City fame), some marvellously shonky puppet-style monsters, and a fair amount of gratuitous gore (including plucked eyeballs and a decapitation). It's all incredibly silly, of course, with people trapped in a toy warehouse, terrorised by a demonic jack-in-the-box, a deadly doll called Oopsie Daisy, and a giant killer teddy bear (controlled by an evil spirit who wants to be reborn as a human), but not so bad that it didn't deserve a respectable DVD release with a more representative sleeve.5.5 out of 10, rounded up to 6 for IMDb.
Charles Band just can't seem to escape movies featuring small stop-motion creations! First, there was LASERBLAST. Then there was PUPPET MASTERS. Between that and DEMONIC TOYS, he started PREHYSTERIA! And what's remarkable about all the ones I mentioned is even if the movies sucked, you were always guaranteed good special effects. Anyway, so the basic story of DEMONIC TOYS has an undercover cop, several cop-killing criminals and a few security guards trapped inside a giant toy factory. As night wears on, the toys come to life and start killing off the characters in creative ways. Personally, I found it to be kinda like PUPPET MASTER. It's got originality, I'll give it that, but a lot of the film feels like a retread of his earlier work. Acting is, on the whole, adequate. As expected, there are a few wooden actors. But in these types of films, we shouldn't expect to see any Oliviers! The real stars are the toys and special effects. And as usual, the filmmakers deliver on those promises. Dialogue is pretty witty too. One of the toys, a baby doll, has a number of memorable and hilarious killer quips. If nothing else, this movie started a series and would eventually lead to numerous VERSUS movies. So, watch and enjoy some mild and senseless entertainment!
~Spoiler~ I first saw Demonic Toys when I was probably 11 or 12. It was a lot cooler back then. Demonic Toys is another one of Full Moon's puppets-on-the-loose films. What's with Charles Band's obsession with dolls? I like the first few Puppetmaster films as well as Stuart Gordon's Dolls, but after Blood Dolls, Ragdoll, Doll Graveyard, Dollman, and this, I've had enough. Seriously, give it up. This time the two dumbest cops and the two dumbest criminals are responsible for the evil toys coming to life. Tracy Scoggins plays one of the dumb cops, and our heroine. Yippee. I don't have a problem with Scoggins, it's her character. I don't think I've seen a more idiotic main character ever. Our secondary characters are a chicken delivery boy (played by Robert Mitchum's grandson, Bentley) and a homeless girl who knows EXACTLY what is going on. How she knows everything is never revealed. I can't say that I was surprised by that fact. I can't believe David Goyer wrote this garbage! He's come a long way in his career. The effects aren't that great either. And they were done by John Carl Beuchler. He's usually a top notch creature designer. If you take a look at the Jack in the Box design, I'd say the guys behind Killer Klowns could have sued. The only positive thing I can say about the film is Baby Oopsy Daisy's foul mouth had me cracking up. Even though the movie wasn't great, Full Moon was way ahead of their time in certain regards. Videozone was a great concept, selling device, and precursor to DVD special features. Videozone was the best thing about renting Full Moon flicks. They told you what was coming out and let you see sneak peeks into the world of making horror movies. In this particular Videozone, Band shows the poster art for Puppetmaster IV. It features the Puppetmaster gang going up against the Demonic Toys. That actually wouldn't happen until 10 years later with Puppetmaster Vs. Demonic Toys.
"Demonic Toys" is another wonderful, low-budget offering of horror hokum from Charles Band's Full Moon studio.A combination of slightly over-the-top performances (Bentley Mitchum sounds like Bill Paxton's Hudson from "Aliens" when under pressure), some interesting special effects and a selection of simply wonderful "demonic toys" (the teddy bear and baby doll are inspired) result in 90 minutes of entertaining viewing. There's more of the red stuff than in most Full Moon features - gore-hounds won't be knocked out by the amount of blood and guts but there are enough scenes of surreal violence to prevent boredom setting in.Fans of cheesy horror should enjoy this one. Its heart is in the right place and the film looks great - very dark and atmospheric. The effective score by the always reliable Richard Band is the icing on the cake.
