it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.
I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible
a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
One of the '80s cult "horrors". Only when I remember how scary this was to me when I was a kid, and now I can not classify it as horror at all. Although I have no idea where else to put it. The '80s were the golden era for this kind of movies and this one is one of the best in this genre. The only trouble is that watching one of them reminds me of five others and then I have to see them again and then I remember many more and it is a vicious circle that never ends.8/10 which is basically 10/10 within the genre :D
I remember first watching this movie at age 10 and was spooked like hell! Chucky always will be one of my favorite horror movie slashers. There are seven films right now, but there's only one original. This has outstanding talented acting, editing, and writing. I'll never be more scared by another Chucky movie than this one!!!
Seeing as it's October I decided to go back and watch some of my favourite horror villains back in their heyday . I have loved the character of Chucky for a long time but having watched the latest in the child's play/ Chucky saga (cult of Chucky ) I realised that I have seen 6 of the 7 films ( I always believed I had seen child's play before ) so I decided to watch it today and I am still a fan especially of brad douriff's portrayal of Chucky and the way he carries himself through the animatronic doll . But having lived in a mostly hd era I couldn't help but get carried away with picking out when you can clearly see an actor dressed as the titular doll through many of the scenes . I am Not saying it ruins the movie, as I am no way a critic or an expert I am merely a fan . So I decided to let that all slide and enjoy the movie which i did a lot! . For a genre that was full at the time with masked killers , ghosts and zombies child's play shows that with the right aesthetic and pacing a killer doll can actually be a fun and intriguing concept . As I said earlier brad douriff was excellent as always . Alex Vincent was a convincing foil for the titular doll as he was trying tell and show his mother and the detective that it was in fact Chucky who killed the babysitter and Eddie . While they were convinced that Andy was just using the doll as a scapegoat. But boy when Andes mother finally realises she has been wrong this whole time and when Chucky reveals himself to her I actually jumped . All in all this was a good 80's horror movie but it could of been helped by better casting of the adults and more convincing line readings . But all that was just a sign of the times as this moves deserves and rightfully takes its place in horror history .
My mission to watch 30 horror movies from the 80's continues with Child's Play (1988). Doesn't really work as a horror, but appears interesting mainly due to its fame. The convenience, continuity errors and teleporting characters are not really that annoying once you get over the lack of mystery - and view the movie as a linearly told story. After this, the biggest problem lies in the acting. I understand our main actor was only 6-7 years old when filming this, but he doesn't deliver anything but dullness. Or maybe the problem is -in fact- Chucky, who just isn't even a bit scary. Just maybe our actor shares the same shock factor with the viewer, myself. "To kill him, you must pierce its heart." So of course we first burn it, shoot it in the head. And hand. And leg. And then finally we kill it, but only 15 minutes later to add to running time and make it dragging. Weirdly, the last 15 minutes and the part that dragged, was the memorable bit of this movie. It was the essence of 'Child's Play' and made it worth the while. All in all very mediocre and originality lacking take into the horror genre, but still managed to be what it aimed to. 5/10.
