8.8
2000 2 hr 4 min Documentary , Music

Jeff Buckley - Live in Chicago includes songs from Grace, classic cover tunes (from sources ranging from Nina Simone to the MC5!), a previously unavailable Buckley composition ("What Will You Say"), a previously unreleased instrumental version of "Vancouver," and between-the-songs on-stage banter. In addition to the full-length Chicago concert, the DVD edition of Live In Chicago features two extremely rare in-the-studio acoustic songs: "So Real" and "Last Goodbye" as well as the Electronic Press Kit (EPK) for Grace (which has been previously unavailable commercially), interactive menus, instant chapter access to songs and a discography of Jeff's Columbia Records releases.

I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable

As something of a hardcore Jeff Buckley fan (which he would have hated), I was really looking forward to seeing and hearing a complete show.First of all, the opening to "Dream Brother" amazed me. He soared through his vocal range, ululating at every opportunity, and showing how superb his vocal abilities were.Lovely performances throughout, on the spot improvisation, intimacy on the slower numbers, and aggression on songs such as MC5's "Kick out the Jams". Also, his quick retorts to people asking him to play his father's "Get on top", where they shouted "get on top of me woman", Jeff retorted with "How about get on top of my coffin, woman". His face, showing the immersion in the music, and the passion that could inspire everyone. My favourite performances are "Mojo Pin", and "lover, you should've come over".An excellent performance, and nice extras too... shame that the Grace EPK has been extended for the grace legacy edition DVD... but I think this deserves a 10 for quality of DVD, and a 10 for the man behind it.Thank-you Mary Guibert and Michael Tighe for helping so much with the live CD "Mystery white boy" and the "live in chicago" DVD.Jeff is sadly missed.

A breathtaking, eerie performance. A MUST-HAVE for any JB fan. "Vancouver" is a definite highlight of this show, making you wish more songs from "Sketches For My Sweetheart the Drunk" were performed. Yet a sad reminder of one of the most groundbreaking artists of the 90's with a musical style that rocked the music world unlike no other of his time.

Heart moving gig by Jeff and his band during the Grace tour.Jeff voice is incredibly brilliant with stunning versions of Mojo Pin, Dream Brother and Grace. The famous cover of Hallelujah is sung "a cappella" for few lines as encore of the concert. Humor and feeling for the entire length of this show, with Jeff getting tired of the audience's request for 70's hits («Stairway to Free Bird»!!!). I recommend the DVD version because the 5.1 encoding is very warm and clear and the extra features are very good, most of all that TV live show with a great unplugged version of So Real. I think that this video is the best Jeff Buckley live album ever released.
