His “Isle Of Wight” concert, which is presented on this disc, features many of Jimi’s best material, supported by his “Experience” band, with Billy Cox on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums. “Freedom”, “Voodoo Chile”, “All Along The Watchtower”, “Red House”, and “Machine Gun” are only a few of the highlights on this disc. During this infamous concert, Jimi was also playing “New Rising Sun” and “Lover Man”, both of which are unfortunately missing from this recording for some reason.

Supertramp - BBC in Concert
Supertramp - BBC in Concert
Over to London this weekend for a concert by 70′s legends Supertramp, recorded by the BBC as part of their Sight and Sound series on November 17, 1977. Forming in 1969, Supertramp quickly rose in popularity and established themselves as one of the most popular of the crossover Art-Rock/mainstream bands. They became a staple on FM and had a string of huge selling singles and albums. Their popularity began to fade in the 1980′s as musical tastes changed with Art-Rock falling out of favor with New Wave. The band eventually went on extended hiatus and reformed later with personnel changes. But there was a time in the mid-seventies where you couldn’t turn on a radio without hearing at least one, if not several Supertramp songs in one sitting; all of which you knew by heart.

Just a quick note that the Australia/New Zealand release DVD that I have (Liberation Music LIBDVD1041) is *not* censored - you can clearly hear the occasional F-word uttered by Coverdale. A couple of the reviews in the liner notes also contain that horrible, horrible word without anything obscuring the letters. :) I purchased this DVD after seeing the first track (Burn) on YouTube. Even though it's not a Whitesnake song it's a great example of how hard these guys rock. Knowing that audio quality suffers somewhat on YouTube I went out and bought the real thing the next day, along with their "Best Of" CD. I'm so glad I did.

I have one comment about this DVD: DO NOT BUY IT!!!!! This DVD is censored - multiple instances of the F word being muted out - and no true fan of any music genre (especially rock) should support censorship in any form.Despite everything good about this DVD (and everything else about this DVD is phenomenal - everything a music DVD should be) we should not be supporting censorship. If there had been a version with an explicit lyrics sticker and another one marked as "edited for content" I would be okay with this - but to censor it outright with no notification to the consumer is outrageous behavior that cannot be tolerated.I have already personally sent multiple emails to the band, the studio, the production company, the retailer where I purchased this DVD, and even the band's PR firm urging them to issue a public apology to fans and offer an uncensored version to those of us who wish to have one. I urge you to do the same.

Hands down, this is my favorite concert DVD out of the many I have watched. I would say the best, but "best" is such a subjective term. This features, of course, David Coverdale as a prime example of sounding at least as good as he ever has, and quite possibly better. As for the rest of Whitesnake, I don't think he has ever assembled a better supporting cast. It has been previously been noted, quite accurately, that Doug Aldrich is given the lion's share of solos in this lineup. But Reb Beach definitely has his moments, and his brilliance does shine through more than once. Tommy Aldridge is a king in my book. What a drummer! I also think Marco Mendoza is the absolute best bass player around, at least in the style of bass he plays. I give this a 10 out of 10.However if it were possible I would deduct about 3/10 for the omission of 2 songs. I can't begin to understand why "Slow N' Easy' and "Slide It In" were left off of this. Truth be told, I could go the rest of my life without ever hearing "Bad Boys" again. The same can be said for "Take Me With You", although they worked that one up really well. But if you take those two away, you definitely have room for two more songs that I find indispensable. Yet these glaring omissions can't take away how marvelous this performance was. As a bonus, when you purchase this DVD, you get a bonus CD with about half of the show on it. I don't possess the words to describe how much i recommend this. I give this a 9.7 GOD bless David Coverdale!!!!

Whitesnake singer David Coverdale has received more than his share of criticism over the years for letting his band be a revolving door platform for talented musicians who come in for an album/tour, then ride off into the sunset only to be replaced on the next tour. Well I dare say that anyone who sees this performance by the 2004 Whitesnake lineup live in London will be thankful that Coverdale hand-picked this group for the tour and DVD. Lead Guitarist Doug Aldrich (fresh from his stint with Dio) shines on every riff and solo, combining technical skill with real heart and soul. Reb Beach (formerly of Winger) takes a back seat to Aldrich while capably handling the rhythm guitar duties here. Tommy Aldridge returns to remind us that he's still an 8-armed octopus on the drums, truly the master of the double-bass kick...and Coverdale himself can still go from a whisper to a scream with all the power, soul and technical accuracy you remember from 1987. He works harder than ever to prove that, at the age of 53, he's still one of hard rock's most dynamic front-men. The video and audio quality are superb here...a must see for any Whitesnake fan, Coverdale fan, Rock fan!
