Surprisingly incoherent and boring
Admirable film.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
This is a great independent b-movie. The budget was a million dollars (a lot less than most mainstream movies), and they spent that money very wisely. This could have easily been shown in theaters and gotten solid reviews. The acting is surprisingly decent. I felt connected to the main characters. They didn't go over the top like with so many other b-movies, and they had such good chemistry I wouldn't be surprised if they were friends outside the movie. The storyline is not completely original and there are some cliché moments, but the story moves fluidly and is executed well. If this had been a mainstream release, my rating probably would be 7 or 8. Since it's a good independent, which is severely lacking in the horror genre of late, I'm giving them an extra point. If more independents were this good, I'd be in horror heaven.
You have never seen a killer like this before. Meet Radford. He drills your heart out with a custom coned-shaped corkscrew. He attacks only when you're scared. He is half phantom, half slasher basically the best parts of Jason and Freddy combined. He wears a freakin human skull over his head. And oh yeah he can also pull a Pleasantville on you and jump in and out of the screen. Without a doubt this film pays homage to the 1970 grindhouse experience, but don't be fooled daring voyeurs, because in contrast this film reinvents what a killer can and cannot do. Radford's a digital ghost if that makes sense, a true villain for the twenty first century. Beware! Character wise Radford is as emotionally conflicted as Norman Bates: he's a director trying to be an actor trying to be a slasher, but who also loves his mommy. I'm a sick guy who likes to root for the killer because to me all blood thirsty slashers are actually angels in disguise. Rebekah Brandes' character has daddy issues which impede her from living her life, but luckily our angel is here to remedy that. For your entertainment and the expense of the lives of minor characters Rebekah learns to get over her fear of domestic violence. This is all very good, but not the films highlight. When the dust settles we get a twist so unexpected, that even to this day my mind is still spinning, and where Rebekah ends up would be something debated between horror fans for years. Rebekah enters the movie and rejoins all of Radford's victims. How is this possible? Is this world real? Did she time travel? Is she dreaming? What if the movie is somehow part of Radford's subconscious? Let the banter begin.
This movie is awesome! The Killer Cut is so much better than the original. They were given so much more to work with when doing the Killer Cut like vamping up their main villain. They were able to go back and rework how some of the effects to make him look even more cruel. I really like how the smaller effects that were added strengthen the villain. Before he was just another monster, but now I think he is more distinguished as a character. Some of the things that I noticed in the new version as opposed to the original were the new scenes that they added. They added more footage to the movie to lengthen some scenes and simply add others. I noticed too that some scenes were missing. The scenes that were cut I think were great decisions because now the movie is more concise in its delivery of the story. I love how the progression of the movie is like a progression of the horror genre itself. This is seen in the violence and the gruesomeness of the film as it progresses. I like it because it's like a literary bow to films before it. I also love the music in the film. The music really makes the heart pump almost like a workout. I saw that it was awarded one of the top 100 scariest scores of all time by XM Radio and Cinemagic. This is a well done film that is worth watching.
Soooo I had the chance to see this movie a couple days ago, and im not gonna lie, I wasn't very excited at first. As me and my friends started the movie I got hooked from the beginning to the very end!! So many bloody awesome scenes that at some points I had to close my eyes! Unlike any of the hundreds of horror movies the plot was weirdly good and also the ending had a very unexpected twist! As the killer goes in and out of the movie within the movie in a bizarre almost "Inception-esk" way, my excitement intensified just as the blood splashing did! This movie remind of the times where I was scared to go to bed because I was too afraid of Freddy, or afraid of walking on corn fields after watching "TX Chain Saw Massacre". "Midnight Movie" is adding another point on my "to be afraid of" list! Great movie for a date, or just to have fun with some friends; but specially, a "must have" for DVD collections!
