This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.
This is a gorgeous movie made by a gorgeous spirit.
Uday and Ragini go on a trip to enjoy each other's company at a secluded house. Uday records some of this with his hand-held. At the house they stay at, there were many cameras, so much of the movie does not suffer from Uday's shaky hands. The MMS is for Multimedia Messaging Service, which allows for multimedia content to be sent over a variety of devices. This would allow for online sex escapades and the like. As in many USA/UK horror films of recent vintage, way too many frames of the movie are of rooms where nothing is moving; perhaps with sound, perhaps not.Uday handcuffs Ragini to a bed; they start intimate activities, but paranormal influences put them off before they get anywhere. Uday cannot find the key to the cuffs. Nice. Ragini sees the cameras, and is displeased with Uday.A voice from somewhere repeats 'I am not a witch,' 'I did not kill my children,' and 'This is my house.'There is a long interval of Ragini, alone, suffering, trying to figure out how to get free of the cuffs and the bed. Ragini finally gets loose about the time that two other people are about to open up the house. She never connects with the two men; she has trouble flagging down the infrequent vehicles on a nearby road.Toward the end, the witch drags Ragini back to the house, but somehow does not manage to kill her. This makes no particular sense given the ease at which it dispatched the men.-------Scores------Cinematography: 4/10 Web cam quality at best; hand-held unsupervised at worst.Sound: 7/10 Better than the video.Acting: 5/10 Kainaz Motivala was fairly good; everyone else was rather bad.Screenplay: 2/10 In 93 minutes I experienced about 30 minutes of irritation (the hand-held camera part), and 63 minutes of boredom from the web-cam segments. 'The medium is the message' is all too true here. I did not see much storytelling done.------There is even rap in this awful movie, during the credits, when disrespect of women was being emphasized. The 3/10 rating might be too high.
It was only matter of time, before Bollywood get into the found footage genre.Ragini MMS (2011) Hindi movie, no need for any subs, as most of the times, they speak in English! Two couple who go to farmhouse and most of time, all they think of is having Sex.when get into the mood, there friends come, thing start to get scary. We see the ghost here and there, it is a shame , cause it take the tension away, however there were some scenes, that were actually surprising good.Near the end, after some descent scenes, it loses it tension again , which makes go down hill. This is actually Bollywood version Paranormal Activity4 out of 10 I think worth watching for least once! (Just for laugh).
In a country where movies like 1920, and Phoonk qualify as horror tales, you have to see the major step forward that this one makes. The location chosen was good, especially the grove of trees that one has to cross to get to the house (Blair Witch Project). I remember seeing the couple pass through it on their way in, at the beginning of the movie and it had struck me then that the last scene will most likely play out there (and it did). Apart from that, the director has got a lot of techniques right; the inclusion, and focus on, mirrors, using night-vision and switching it off at all the right places. Even the basic premise of the place being rigged with cameras and the whole movie being shown through their lenses (Paranormal Activity), gives it the more realistic and hands-on touch. My only complaint to the director is why not let that authenticity prevail? Why put in those shrieking and high-pitched background noises every time the ghost makes an appearance, speaking of which, why show the ghost so early in the movie, or even at all? Why not let the imaginations of the audience fly and let them fill in the gaps themselves? Because when you do that, every member of the audience fills it up with what terrifies him/her the most; the fear of the unknown being much greater. Another credit to the movie is that its parallel storyline, the one about the guy videotaping his sex sessions, was interesting enough to make you forget, at least for a few moments, that you are in to watch a horror movie. You even pray at times, for the ghost to intervene quickly, before the guy gets any material. Also, when the ghost does kill the guy, she doesn't stop going after the girl, something I was really afraid would happen, the ghost revealing her benevolent self and everyone going home happy. For Bollywood horror movies, this does represent a level of maturity, hitherto mostly unseen.A special mention for the casting; the female lead plays her role well, depicting an innocent and trusting girl caught up in her boyfriend's malevolent schemes, and later running for her life from the ghost. All in all, watch it if you are an avid Bollywood movie-watcher, its unlike anything you have seen till date. And for the ones into Hollywood horror movies like myself, watch it, but don't expect a single shock, or even a mild chill, and then sit down to write a review.
After a long time a decent Hindi horror movie maybe after darr of RamGopal Varma before he turned himself into a factory.Premise is simple and though they say it to be inspired by real events this kind of story of a wronged soul communicating with innocent/scheming outsiders has been repeated umpteen number of times. But thankfully it does not have that typical Ojha/magician so common in all Hindi movies who comes to deal with the bad soul neither it has a religious figure normally a priest or someone who comes to frighten away the ghost. This makes the story very realistic. Acting by lead pair is too good ,though movie sags towards end but length has been kept proper and it ends before viewer will get bored. Good movie. 8/10
