Very disappointing...
Slow pace in the most part of the movie.
Just perfect...
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
The Plot is good. This film shows the ego's and theatrics that can come into many churches. Do you go to church for entertainment or to worship? This film epitomizes the the entertainment and politics end. It does have a few songs that mentions God and Jesus. Not that it isn't realistic. It is. But this is the worst of the movie. The best of it is that it does help the viewer see the right and wrong behaviors of a church pastor, church member and Christian. Frank said to his wife,"I may have been in the dark all this time and I just didn't know it." This movie helps the viewer (Christian or non)to hopefully see and understand that we all--even our pastors--struggle with personal problems and how we all for short of expectations of God and our loved ones. As with many that struggle with their faith this movie shows us that we are able to change, but only with the help of God's Holy Spirit. This isn't to say that it isn't a good movie-everyone has their own opinion. But you have to see for yourself to decide.
I received this movie as a gift this year (2010) and frankly, had never heard of it, even though I pay attention to movie releases. I approached it with no expectations whatsoever. To me, almost everything about the movie, including the Christian subculture, the cast, the director, and so on, was an unknown. I've never seen a movie rated with so many 1's and 10's before. I suspect that people are projecting their religious agendas, and not properly rating the movie itself. A movie needs a good story; and I found the story engrossing, so that gives it at least a 6, for me. What particularly fascinated me was the highly interior look at personal conflict and challenges in church ministry, and this is a very honest movie. The music and the setting were an entertaining and enjoyable backdrop to the story, enough to raise the score to a 7. The acting won't win Oscars, but I felt deeply involved emotionally at various points in the story. Because of the Christian context, I believe many viewers just won't get into the story. The only thing to add is that I've never actually seen a movie like this; that in itself makes it worth watching, and brings the score to an 8, which places it within the top 10% of movies I've seen.
Anyone who gave this a 1 out of 10 is either anti-Christian or anti-Black or both.Possible spoilers so beware This was a beautiful movie on several different levels. Besides the obvious - great Gospel music, it was also visually pleasing with the quick camera in and out cuts, great acting, and a movie with an uplifting message.I especially liked the actor who played David - he had a great presence. His body language spoke louder than his words. I wish the actress who played Rev Frank's wife was more developed in the movie because I thought her character was quite interesting. I also thought the transformation of Rev Frank was done abruptly at the end; I would have preferred more development of this metamorphosis as well.Overall, this movie worked for me. Admittedly, I love the Word of God and I have a special love for God's people. Thus, I am biased, I know.
My excellent rating for this movie is based on the story line. What was so moving to me was how realistic and relevant the story is to living "the Christian life" in today's world. Christian or not, we are all human and I'm sure I'm not the only one that can relate to this movie. Your life may not be exactly as that of the characters but you can probably relate to their personal characters. One of my favorite quotes from this movie is "Don't allow those situations in your life to keep you from having a relationship with God...you need to know Him." Perhaps it was just that the message of this movie is what I needed to hear, but I will confess that the message brought me to my knees. I pray that if you are at a point in your life "exactly where He wants you to be" that you will also appreciate the message and find hope.
