Crappy film
In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
Funny, strange, confrontational and subversive, this is one of the most interesting experiences you'll have at the cinema this year.
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
This movie is a piece of art. It tugs at your emotions and empathy. The pain of Chand, the main character, is felt as you watch her endless tribulations and abuse in the home of her new in-laws. The end of the film also plays and flirts with Indian folklore and symbolism which makes the ending mysterious. It's clear that there are several mixed reviews, however those who dislike the film most likely don't understand the culture and folklore played into the films inspiring ending.
Theme of the movie is presented very well. Deepa mehta did a great job. Whole movie goes wonderfully until climax. Climax is totally unpredictable and little boring. All actors did fine work especially preity zinta. I never expected such a good movie from preity zinta. Cinematography is presented in a very good manner. Absolutely worth watching movie. You will find the characters close to someone you know. You will love the movie as it goes forward and probably won't want to left the chair you are sitting on.Language (punjabi) is quiet hard to understand as i am a pakistani myself. I never expected such a good movie from preity zinta.
This is one of the worst movie I have ever seen. The starting 10mins is the only good part of the movie showing traditional Punjabi music / songs. After that it becomes slow... slower and slowest... and never picks up the pace.... This was 106 minute movie... and feels like 306 minutes there are pin drop silent moments which could have been done better by adding background score... There were many scenes which makes no sense or could have been easily edited .... so that was also not upto the mark...Preity Zinta did good acting... her good work was literally wasted in this worthless movie....I would not recommend this movie to anyone... *** CONTAINS SPOILER *** No one expects adding factitious stuff like KING COBRA in the film.. this is really good topic and could have been done / presented in much better way... I had very high expectations from a reputed director like Deepa Mehta...Also the place where the kid throws the dentures of his grandpa into drain should be after he is told that his bed will be taken by his uncle... so cinematography is not up to the par either...
I agree with the last person who rated this film as horrible. Such films give any genre of independent film a bad name. I think now that Mehta's is trying to show mainstream audiences taboo topics in an interesting way but, failing miserably. I thought the film was shot well and looked colorful enough yet I felt that Chand's character could have been better developed and I would also like to have seen Rocky in any other light but a monster. I am sure even he is a victim of some abuse from his family but his father did not even seem as evil as he was. I cannot understand how some Indians can be ashamed of slum dog for depicting India as "a dirty country" when films like this show just how horrible some Indian community's are yet seem to accept it as just as another fact of life. I guess that's the message the film is going for...?
