Coming Soon
Privileged teenage friends Jenny, Nell and Stream spend their senior year on a quest to rid Stream of her virginity. However, Stream wants more than just her first sexual experience. She wants to have an orgasm -- but achieving this proves problematic, as the boys she meets are hardly sensitive enough to provide her the release she seeks. When it becomes clear that Nell and Jenny have never experienced an orgasm either, all three set out to get one.

Powerful
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
Blistering performances.
The acting in this movie is really good.
I'm not a big fan of teen sex comedies; indeed, I'm probably the only person in the world who's never watched "Fast Times at Ridgemount High." I never got any when I was in high school, so I'm in no mood to see other people have all the fun I missed out on. However, I saw parts of "Coming Soon" on late night cable a few years ago and have been waiting to see the entire movie. It was worth the wait. All three of the young heroines are achingly beautiful; Bonnie Root in particular shines as good-hearted Stream, the Vermont girl trying to fit in with her tragically hip Manhattan party girl friends. Tricia Vessey brings an appealing vulnerability to the role of Nel, the depressive model who blossoms when she discovers her lesbianism. Gaby Hoffmann, who made such a big impression years ago in "Sleepless in Seattle," is appropriately bitchy as the bossy know-it-all Jenny; with her bangs and dark eyelashes Ms. Hoffmann would have been great as a silent film star. The script is funny and perceptive, and the three leads are supported by a talented cast of veteran performers, especially the hilarious Mia Farrow as Stream's hippie mom. The movie scores satirical points about peer pressure and the overemphasis on getting into a "good school," which makes young people feel like failures if they can't get into an overpriced Ivy League establishment. This film has joined the ranks of "Legally Blonde" and "Heartbreakers" as one of my all-time favorite guilty pleasure chick flicks.
"Coming Soon" tackles the topic of teenage sex in a refreshing way-- frankly, cleverly and sensitively. I admire the writer's decision to show that the magic elixir for the story was being comfortable in one's own skin-- in other teen schlock movies, the arcs end when the protagonist finally falls in love, and it always completely contrived. (Not to say that this isn't fantastic in it's own right; I mean, who didn't love the ending to "Sixteen Candles"?) In this case, the love-focused plot lines are secondary to the self-discovery/self-actualization ideas, and therefore the story itself is all the more valuable. Plus, the whole film is charming and certainly worth seeing.
I'm quite frankly shocked at how many positive comments there are regarding this film. There are good films, and then there are bad films that people like anyway. This movie isn't either. This is a dumb, careless movie movie populated with vapid characters. The three girls spend most of their time obsessing about themselves and being wrong about sex. The following scene happens about three times: "OMIGOD! I've NEVER had an orgasm! I just THOUGHT I did!" This film has been compared to American Pie, which is pretty funny, because AP actually treated female orgasm more intelligently. The dialogue is laughable. "He's the bomb, I guess." (regarding a character so scudsy you can't help but wonder if the director has it in for prep school kids.) Most of the adults are gross caricatures. The only two characters who I found remotely tolerable were Mia Farrow (a hippie joke who nonetheless has some smart dialogue.) and what-sis -face from Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza place. In fact, I actually liked his character until he started singing. Oh well.Stay away from this movie. There are smarter, better films about teenage girls having sex.
This film is really funny, a great gender twist on a old story cliche, and to top it all off, Bonnie Root is certainly a talent to keep an eye out for! She alone makes the film worth watching IMHO!!!! Her scenes are funny and great!
