Wonderful character development!
To me, this movie is perfection.
good back-story, and good acting
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
Looking at it as a cinematic work of art... one could easily find fault. I loved the originality of the story line. I was at the edge of my seat till the end. I felt the emotions of most of the characters. Tragically, as beautiful as Scotland is... I am fully aware of the tribalisms that could lead to this type of outcome....so after this film, I will never go.I wont throw out any spoilers, but what happened to the lead characters in th beginning, has always been my biggest fear. I was ready to vomit through out the film from the tragedy, to the end. It is not a relaxing film, it twists your stomach to the end.
Two hapless city boys play hunters in the Highlands and after one life-changing mishap.... One thing leads to another. They dig a hole for themselves; the hole gets deeper; etc etc. It's a tried and tested formula. Sometimes it doesn't work; sometimes it does; and on extremely rare occasions it is pulled off to perfection. You won't see another film that has you chewing your nails off quite as much as this. You'll cringe, you'll jump, you'll not wanna look at times, but you will watch it to the end and you'll tell your friends about it! Guaranteed!
What a film, a hidden gem to say the least and one of the best British production films i have ever seen.I usually avoid British films like the plague and in particular gangster uk films due to the lack of depth/acting/direction and ofcourse the script but Calibre was different, it had everything for me/// script/production/acting/location and direction also was not bad at all. Matt Palmer who i had never heard of until this movie nailed it in my opinion, he managed to russle up a great script and not only that, he also wrestled some great actors into the frame, Tony Curran is a well known and fantastic Glasweigian actor, also Jack Lowden is for me an up and coming actor to keep a close eye on as he looks like he will grow and hit the top aswell due to his early Theatre works.Fantastic performance from Martin McCann aswell i have to say too throughout (call the cops stinking of Whiskey?) brilliant !I have to add that Kate Bracken done her part quite well too but i dont know if its just me but she is a dead ringer for Rachel McAdams in this particular movie.I also have to add that i am myself scottish and love hunting,i also love the highlands. It ofcourse points me in the direction of being one sided, however this is not the case, i have rated this movie ohnestly. For me this movie was exciting, exhilarating, unexpected, very powerful and will relate to cold case type files for movie or made for movie type series program viewers.Good Luck !
Having just watched CALIBRE on Netflix, I'm afraid that I'm not seeing what other reviewers on this site are seeing. For me, this is a typical independent-feeling thriller, lacking thrills, action, and originality, and instead content to go through the motions rather than innovating. The story is about a couple of friends who head into the Scottish wilderness for a spot of hunting but instead find only distrust and eventually open hatred. There's a shocking plot twist early on which plays out effectively, but otherwise this is mundane and overtly familiar, reminiscent of the likes of STRAW DOGS but nowhere near as good. Tony Curran and Ian Pirie are solid in support, but the young actors struggle with their unsympathetic characters and the whole thing is a real slog to watch.
