Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

Akshay Kumar originally started as an action hero in the 90s before people saw his talent as a comedian. He proved his talent by doing fabulous comedy, decent emotional and family drama type films, and a couple serious films. In the 90s, Akshay Kumar wasn't much of a big name till he got blockbuster films like Main Khiladi Tu Anari(1994) and Mohra(1994). However, the first time he tasted the super success was Khiladi(1992). In the early days of his career, Akshay only had flop films, but he didn't accept defeat, he got his hit films after a lot of hard work and patience.Dancer is one of his earliest films that didn't work at the box office. The film was critically and commercially unsuccessful. Many critics didn't even take a look at the film because it was a terrible B Grade version of Mithun's classic super hit film Disco Dancer. Akshay neither had the super dance moves like Mithun not did he have any proper acting skills. He was raw just like Sanjay Dutt was before he got Naam(1986).I wasn't expecting much from Dancer because it doesn't really work, compared to most low budget films, this is somewhat decent. However, if you compare it to some of Akshay's films later in the 90s or today in 2013, you will see the difference in content and the maturity in Akshay's acting. The film tells the typical story of a young boy who loses his dad and his mom gets arrested for murdering his dad(when she didn't do it). A devastated Raju grows up without his mom and he becomes a dancing star over night. Everyone wants to see Raju thrust his pelvis, he is so popular. However, all is not smooth because his competitor gets jealous and tries everything he can to stop Raju from dancing(so he can take his place). What follows is how Raju falls for a girl and this girl is the daughter of the same guy who murdered his dad. When his mom(who was released from jail) finds out, she doesn't let Raju be with that girl. Raju is captured and electrified by the enemies but he escapes and fights the villains. As most Indian films, the ending is happy.Direction by Kishore Vyas is ordinary, the story flows and functions but the story itself isn't anything great. The concept is boring and there aren't many hard hitting scenes, the film fails to grab your attention. It's the same typical movie with poor acting from most stars of the film. The film becomes tedious in the second half because it goes on and on, the drag kills the film, the film moves slowly till it reaches the climax. The ending is ridiculous and the message that describes Raju's condition is so bad it's funny.Akshay Kumar wasn't much of a good actor, even in Khiladi, he overacted in some scenes as he was raw. Here, he is strictly average because he terribly overacts in certain scenes. However, he has the fresh look and his raw action scenes are a delight to watch. The heroines are wooden and don't know what acting is. Anjana Mumtaaz plays the typical mother, her act is functional. Mohnish Behl and Dalip Tahil play the typical villains, they are functional. The rest provide average support. On the whole, Dancer is one of Akshay's early films that didn't work. The film isn't anything great and is recommending for fans of Akshay only. Being a huge fan of Akshay, I couldn't resist to watch his below average films.
