I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

David and Bathsheba is a biblical epic film about King David made by Henry King.It stars Gregory Peck and Susan Hayward in the title roles. King David was the second king of Israel and this film is based on the second Old Testament book of Samuel from the Bible. It follows King David's life as he adjusts to ruling as a King and his romantic relationship with Bathsheba,the wife of his most trusted man,Uriah.The film is definitely a spectacle and it was a good adaptation of the Old Testament story.Added to that,Peck and Hayward did well in their portrayal of King David and Bathsheba respectively.The movie treated the second Israelite king with great respect and reverence.Also,there was a lot of lavish scenes that will supply tons of entertainment despite the fact that it maybe considered somewhat melodramatic by today's standards.

I'm surprised this film doesn't get more recognition. Possibly the best of the old classic bible films. Excellent cinematography and effects considering it was filmed in 1951. Gregory Peck is believable and excellent as King David. The dialogue is a bit trite at times, but still generally strong. Susan Hayward is beautiful and solid in her role as Bathsheba, and Raymond Massey is a delight as Nathan. A bit plodding at times, but an engaging telling of one of the most famous stories of all time. The scenes of David playing the harp while reciting the 23rd Psalm and the David and Goliath scene must have a challenge to put on film, but they are amazingly well done. A moving story, a classic movie.

This film has all the size and grandeur of many of the great biblical epics of the 1950's and '60's. But it is also perhaps the first that really humanizes the biblical characters themselves. This is a unique and compelling balance that helps us to realize that even great figures like King David are flawed people who can find their faith and greatness in facing these very flaws.The actors are all first rate in the film from Gilbert Barnett as David's second son Absolom through to the wonderful Susan Hayward as Bathsheba. Hayward is at her best in this film. Her own larger than life but very truthful style of acting is quite at home on the TV screen as it was when first seen on the wide cinimascope screens of the 1950's. She is the seductress of the piece, but she plays the role in such a way that you sympathize with her.Raymond Massey does a great job as Nathan the prophet. As a child when I first saw the film, Massey seemed like he truly had just conversed with the Lord himself and was an awesome sight. No doubt helped also by the great music composed by the always amazing Alfred Newman who also had great successes in other biblical epics like "The Robe" and "The Greatest Story Ever Told" along with perhaps 100 other films too! The cinema photography by Leon Shamroy is well done and adds to the size but also the intimacy of the film. Henry King, a truly underrated film director who like William Wyler never really pigeon-holed himself into any one genre, pulls together a larger than life production that never loses sight of the love story between David and Bathsheba and David's own deep struggle with his faith in God. The path tread in this film could have been very hokey, but King keeps it real and interesting all the way. Plus we never lose the sense of mystery about trying to understand the will of God, just as David himself is struggling with the same. From the first scene where a soldier dies trying to save the ark from destruction. David is not satisfied with Nathan's answer, (to paraphrase)that no one can understand the will of God. This is the journey we embark on right through to the powerful ending where David is finally confronted with himself.Finally this film belongs to Gregory Peck who is wonderful as King David. His David is a man you can believe could rule a country as King and Warrior but who was also at one time a gentle and faithful singer of psalms. This is one of his best performances.I don't see this movie on television much anymore, but when I do I never fail to watch it. I think it still holds up very well today.

It tells from the prophet Samuel (Raymond Massey) appointed him , when after in his kingdom Saul (Francis X Bushman) and his son Jonathan were vanquished by Philistines . When Saul was murdered by a blade slashed himself, David (Peck) claimed his reign by right of his marriage to Saul's daughter(Jane Meadows) . The continued threat and domination of invaders countries forced the Jewish tribes uniting under a strong king : David. He's specially recorded for his acquisition of his favorite spouse , Bathsheba (Susan Hayward), though he had a harem , too . The new wife was accomplished by sending her husband named Uria (Kieron Moore) the Hitita , a warrior serving as mercenary, into way in war. His throne was marred by the habitual dynastic fights between his sons , Absalom (Barnett) killed Ammon and after rebelled and was murdered . There are also developed various events about David-life , such as the arrival in Jerusalen the Ark of the Covenant with supernatural qualities ; David playing harp , in fact , David had entered Saul's household as a sort of musical therapist , the Hebrew politics intrigues and pitting against the Old Testament wrath of the Prophet Nathan and , of course , David- Goliath fighting is seen in flashback , defeating with a throwing wave a ten-foot-tall Philistine giant . Later rebellion Absalon and killing Ammon , succeeded Salomon , son of Bathseba , he inherited the reign at David'death and became himself a major king of Israel , building the famous temple of Salomon where held the Ark . David and Salomon were the two great kings of Israel.Interesting Biblical story with emotion , rousing battles , an intense drama about love and hatred , being some moments proceeded in slow moving pace . And including the legendary biblical fight between David and Goliath is well featured in the movie by means of flashbacks . The film's story from the Bible was based upon its books of Samuel I and II, Chronicles I and the Psalms of David . Very good acting by main cast , Gregory Peck and Susan Hayward ; Peck stated that the movie was written as an attack on McCarthyism, which he strongly opposed . This Biblical epic contains good set decoration and art direction (Thomas Little , Lyle Weeler, George Davis) but is a little boring and dull with long speeches that it makes stately pace , especially when David is praying in the Tabernacle where is the Ark of Covenant . The movie gets a colorful cinematography and evocative music score by the classic Alfred Newman . The motion picture was professionally directed by Henry King. His direction is well crafted , here he develops a thought-provoking and broody screenplay . He was a expert on compelling Adventure/Western genre .
