Excellent adaptation.
Brilliant and touching
Absolutely Fantastic
A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
Buxom blonde Vegas showgirl Judith (Regina Carrol) goes looking for her missing sister Joanie (Maria Lease), her search leading her to a fairground sideshow run by Dr. Duryea (J. Carrol Naish), the last of the Frankenstein family, who is working on a serum that can revive the dead. Helping Duryea in his work is hulking axe-wielding dope Groton (Lon Chaney Jr.) and midget barker Grazbo (Angelo Rossito). Also joining in with the fun are Count Dracula (Zandor Vorkov), who believes that the scientist's serum will make him invincible, and Frankenstein's monster, who has been exhumed by the vampire. There's no denying that Dracula vs Frankenstein is a lousy film, shot and acted with zero semblance of skill or talent, but it's also fairly entertaining for that very reason. With a 'make it up as they went along' script, inept special effects, laughable performances, and random guff involving hippies and bikers, this is grade-Z drive-in nonsense that fans of trash cinema will lap up. Among the film's hilarious highlights are Judith's awful musical number (her ample chest barely contained by her outfit), the axe-swinging Groton lopping off Joanie's head, Judith having a bad acid trip, the unexpected death of a major character (zapped by Dracula's deadly laser ring), and the unforgettable sight of Dracula ripping off the monster's arms.
This is a great movie. It a Dracula sequel. It is also a Frankenstein sequel. It is very scary. It is one of the scariest movies ever made. It is scarier then The exorcist. It has a great story line. It also has great acting. It also has great special effects. If this movie does not scary you then no movie will. Dracula meet the descendant of Doctor Frankenstein. They resurrect the Frankenstein monster. They use him for revenge for Doctor Frankenstein. Then he turns on Dracula. Very scary. I need more lines and I am running out of things to say. This a great movie. It is very underrated. It is a horror movie classic. Great movie great movie great movie great movie.
Sometimes it's difficult to rate low budget horror that can be terrible, yet you can't pull your eyes away from it. Dracula vs. Frankenstein attempts a stab at greatness on a shoestring budget with classic monsters battling in a psychedelic background. J. Carroll Nash and Lon Chaney Jr. add some legitimacy to a no-name cast, although Chaney is starting to look pretty rough by 1971. The echo effect on Zander Vorkov's voice as Dracula is priceless! Dracula vs Frankenstein would be great as a grade Z double bill with other great horror failures of the era like the Astro Zombies or maybe The Curse of Bigfoot!
Dracula vs. Frankenstein (1971)** 1/2 (out of 4) Count Dracula visits the ailing Dr. Frankenstein (J. Carrol Naish) and asks him to bring the monster back to life so that he can use him to bring in fresh blood. The doctor and his mute assistant (Lon Chaney, Jr.) agree but soon the monster goes off on his own and turns against Dracula. Yes, this is a really poorly made film but I seriously doubt that director Adamson and producer Sam Sherman were making this to try and nab a Best Picture Oscar. I'm fairly certain that they wanted to deliver an entertaining drive-in picture and that's exactly what they've done. It seems Adamson just took suggestions from a suggestion box and threw everything except the kitchen sink into this film and its surreal nature really makes it stand out in the genre. We've got one of the ugliest monsters ever, Dracula's weird voice and a drunken (and depressing to watch) Chaney going around with an axe. The movie has an incredibly low budget but this just adds to the charm of the film. The movie remains entertaining due to all the weirdness but I think Adamson would have made a better film if he would have cut out scenes of the couple trying to uncover the truth and stuck in more monster mania. Heck, even the dwarf is more entertaining than a lot of the scenes involving the couple. This was both Naish and Chaney's final film, which is pretty sad when you consider the type of film this is. I think both men bring a lot of fun to the film but as I said earlier, it's rather sad seeing Chaney in such bad shape due to his alcoholism. Naish actually manages to turn in a pretty good performance. When the showdown between Dracula and the monster finally happens it's a bit of a mixed blessing. The way the two fight and the outcome are very entertaining but the scene is shot so dark that it's hard to see some of the action, which is a shame. In the end, this film is pure camp and isn't meant to be judged as an Orson Welles film. If you enjoy drive-in trash then this is one of the best out there.
