Laurie and Hugh are a successful young couple who have just closed on a weekend home away from the city. Unbeknownst to them, the neighboring property contains the crumbling remains of a boarding school that was shuttered in the wake of an unspeakable massacre. The sole survivor of that massacre still resides in the ruins of the school, hiding from the world and wanting only to be left alone. When Laurie and Hugh's friends explore the property, they have no idea that they disturbed an emotionally-broken killing machine: The Blood Widow.

This is surprisingly a good slasher. Not only is the main antagonist a woman with psychological problems, she is also the main killer. The protagonists are typical as far as Hollywood is concerned – they are most likely college buddies and they are living their lives after college. One couple has bought a house and a party has ensued; they have relationship problems throughout. The movie has enough psychological drama, tension and relationship spark to keep the characters going; but this is not the main facet of the movie – instead, it is about the abandoned house next door. As many movies go, the characters trespass where they dare and they've stirred a hornet's nest. Now a sick girl that lives in the ruins of this house, is out to torment some victims. What was tension and good times, quickly turns into characters that are stripped of modern conveniences, herded around like sheep, tormented psychologically, or otherwise picked off one by one in gruesome fashion. If you want to cringe and have our skin crawl, this movie also provides that – characters are regularly stabbed, beaten or dismembered at key points when victory is within their grasp. The movie has lots of twists and moves in different directions. Unbelievable facets of the movie include the dismemberments, beheadings, beatings and tension levels. The movie plays on the highs of them, and it is purely for entertainment; shock value also applies here which the movie has lots of.So in short, the movie is good. The DVD also has a few good extras which make it worth renting. Your choice if you want to buy it; it is certainly a contender for better horror film.Originally posted to Orion Age (http://www.orionphysics.com/? p=7003).

Neophyte director Jeremiah Buckhalt has crafted an auspicious debut with "Blood Widow." This movie has a plethora of delightful kills, all brought to you by the hands of a very capable and, dare I say, quite beautiful killer. The main draw here is the Widow. She is like something out of a baroque masterpiece from hell. I know I will be seeing her doll-like face in my nightmares for some time to come.In addition to the widow's frightening visage, Buckhalt has created a slasher film with quite a droll sense of humor. Jose Miguel Vasquez's Mark in particular delivers quite a few bon mots in the early going. His repartee with Kenneth in the early going is particularly funny. The film's superb third act, however, leaves humor by the wayside as things get deadly serious. The final fight is one of the most intense I've seen in some time, it is certainly not for the squeamish. There were certainly a few flaws, and I won't restrain from sharing my minor quibbles. There are, as in many lower budget films, some audio issues. The music in the second act's party scene didn't quite seem to be what the characters would have partied to in my opinion. All in all, I had a really good time and look forward to Buckhalt unleashes next.

The ending was brilliant in my opinion and the gore was the good gore done right, descent screen play and cast with a good director. I'm hoping it becomes a franchise with several sequels. I'm a slasher fanatic and this was the best one I've seen in awhile. The moments where certain characters hesitate seem so real and the dialog genuine. The killer was cool. I do wish they had chosen a better title. To me this is what horror is suppose to be. I love slasher movies and will try watching all of them and wow so many bad ones get made but every once in awhile I find one the hits the mark. For me the most important things in a slasher film are a cool killer, high body count, a cast that gives it their all and on screen kills that either make you cringe or think that was bloody awesome. When it comes to direct to DVD indie slasher films I don't expect a stellar cast with an amazing storyline, if it had been so it would of got pushed into theaters. I look for new slasher films to watch on a regular basis and after trying 20 or so unwatchable ones I was very happy that I came across this one.

It's refreshing to see a movie that is horror and isn't "found footage" or a ghost. I grew up in the 80's and I grew up on names like Freddy, Michael, and Jason. Blood Widow I feel would have been right in there with those greats. I think this is a great first run. While it does have it's rough patches (what film doesn't) it keeps the blood pouring and the blades a swingin'. It really is a fun movie to watch and the kills get pretty creative. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with when they have a bigger budget now that they worked some of the kinks out. I would have liked to learn more about who the killer was as a person before dawning the mask. I know it sounds a bit mean, but I also wanted more people for her to kill. I also wanted more crossbow, damn it! Overall though I found the movie a fun and gruesome peace of work, and it will be in the mix with all my other Halloween movies.
