The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

I was quite disappointed by Imtiaz Ali's Love Aaj Kal. So much hype before and after release, and for what? For an ordinary story with nothing new to offer. The film is light and simple, but while in some cases these are the good qualities of a film, in this case, these are actually the film's pitfalls. There is actually no real story to speak of, and the film is slow-paced and at times simply boring. Love Aaj Kal is about a young guy named Jai who just ended his relationship with his girlfriend Meera. He then meets a mature Sardar named Veer Singh who tells him of his own story. From then on, the past and the present run concurrently. Saif Ali Khan plays Jai, and in the flashbacks, he plays the young Veer, whose older version is played by Rishi Kapoor. This kind of narrative style is not one to my liking, but it could have been more interesting had it been used and treated differently. For one, I could not understand why Ali had to cast Khan to play the young Rishi Kapoor. If there was some family connection between the characters of Veer and Jai, it would be more tolerable. Also, one has to note that there is absolutely zero resemblance between Khan and Kapoor, which makes it quite odd that the former played the younger version of the latter. The film is not unwatchable by any means, but it is just not a film I personally would want to watch again. There are good things about it, no doubt, but they cannot save the story from being stale and uninspiring. The songs are quite nice to listen to, particularly "Yeh Dooriyan", which is wonderfully sung by Mohit Chauhan, and "Aaj Din Chadheya". The entire soundtrack really fits the film's mood. Saif Ali Khan repeats his young, carefree Don Juan role as Jai. His character has shades of Karan from Hum Tum (according to me his career-best), where he played a modern, cool and kind-hearted womaniser. Khan in an actor of unmatched comic talent, and though he is a bit old to play a character of this sort, here too he performs well and successfully portrays his character's gradual growth. The problem is, as said, casting him in the role of the young Veer. A younger actor would be a more interesting choice for the part. Deepika Padukone is an extremely pretty and attractive lass, and her smile lights up the screen, but something is missing there. Though she does well in some sequences, she fails to register the growth in her character. Rishi Kapoor is wonderful as Veer Singh, Rahul Khanna is okay as Vikay, and Giselle Monteiro is decent as Harleen.Love Aaj Kal has some nice sequences. It was quite funny to see Jai and Meera celebrating their separation, and then regretting it after realising their true feelings for each other. The dialogues are good for the most part. Loved the scene in which Jo, Jai's new girlfriend who is played by a foreign beauty called Florence Brudenell-Bruce, decides to leave him as she notices his indifference towards their relationship. The film can be an entertaining watch with family and friends, though towards the end it has its share of clichés and becomes very predictable. After watching a charming and entertaining piece like Jab We Met, I had high expectations from this Imtiaz Ali film. Unfortunately, in this one the chemistry between the leads is missing, and though the film grows on you as it nears the end, it ends up being worthy of just a one-time watch. I am sure Ali is capable of making much more than just an ordinary love story like this one. Hope he does so in the future.

I had high expectations about this movie. I guess it wasn't all there in it. The movie starts very messy and very boring. Jai gets a relationship and every month you get to see a glimpse about the way the relationship evolve. Jai and Meera gets bored. They break up.Then Rishi Kapoor gets into the story and everything seems so be more interesting. He tells his love story in the past as we continue to follow Jai's and Meera's story in the present. And here the whole movie goes wrong where it can go wrong. Bad writing, editing, acting.Saif Ali acts very immature. His acting from Pareeneeta would have been more suitable in this movie. The way the story switches between now and then is clumsy. It doesn't make the story easy to understand. Rahul Khanna acted lame when he heard Meera was still in love with Jai. Come on, he just swallowed all her crap just the day after he married her! The anger I saw in Abishek Bachchan in Kabhi alvida na kehna was very missed in this scene. In the movie we go from London to India to America. It doesn't work. There is so much that happens in this movie, that is not necessary to let the viewer watch. Like why did Jai have to meet a blonde girl in Londen and take her to India? Why did Rishi Kapoor have to tell Jai his story but not show him the result? With saying this all, Love aajkal had the potential to be a mature movie. With the wrong guidance it grew out to be a small entertaining movie to me. (This is only my opinion, I'm happy to hear lots of people are fan of this movie. I like Saif Ali Khan a lot as an actor, but his acting could have been better).

Haven't we've had enough of all the "guy meets girl, separate (enter the song "Dooriyan"), realize they've made a mistake when it's too late" bull-crap movies? Unfortunately, NO! And sadly enough, I don't even see it happening anytime soon, especially after looking at the box-office opening of Love Aaj Kal. To put it simple for you, picture a movie with Hum Tum & Jab We Met sorts humor, and cheesy dialogs of any corny Hindi movie, with usual London in the background and some "peppy" soundtracks and of course, a "Mr. Cupid" (Rishi Kapoor in this case, same as Hum Tum but not as Saif's father this time), you have Love Aaj Kal. By the way, by "Cupid" I mean the guy who puts all the sanity in the actor to go after his "love" and also, he's been through the same and blah. Movie has some witty jokes thrown at the right moments but that's about it. No. of times I saw my watch: 5 (In a 2 hrs movie, that's a lot, it felt never ending).Saif Ali Khan (Jai Vardhan Singh) has sort of replayed the character of Karan Kapoor (Hum Tum). As for Deepika Padukone (Meera Pandit), to put it subtly, she doesn't know how to act. She looks great on the big screen and knows how to dance, but story ends there. The girl has potential but it can only be tapped if she joins an acting school.By the title Love Aaj Kal, they simply mean how love stories used to be in the past and how they are now. Anyway, if you don't have anything better to do (like today, I didn't) go for this one, better yet wait for the DVD.

With all the hullabaloo surrounding the Love Aaj Jal, the question is does it deserve it all not? In my personal opinion, the answer is no! After Kambakkht Ishq, this is the second film that has all packaging and no substance. It's hard to believe it's Imtiaz Ali who has given films like Socha Na Tha and Jab We Met agreed to direct a film of this sort. For a start, all the actors in the film get no scope to perform. Watching Saif Ali Khan in Love Aaj Kal gave me a déjà vu feeling. It seems like Salaam Namaste and Hum Tum all over again, expect that this is worse. Those films are actually good, but this is bad. As for Deepika, again, she was good in that crying scene towards the end. Otherwise, the role did not demand much from her as an actress. Giselle Monterio is wooden, despite given a role that only required her to smile and move her eye-lashes. She still manages to look cute, but her attempt to dance is horrendous. Rishi Kapoor is wasted. Rahul Khanna is neglected to the backseat.Overall, there is nothing new in Love Aaj Kal, expect for the 'Aaj' and 'Kal' part! Otherwise, I suggest you take a pledge to never watch this film!
