Highly Overrated But Still Good
Excellent, Without a doubt!!
Absolutely brilliant
It's an amazing and heartbreaking story.
After watching this film I realized the definition of a "Nothing Movie" But before we get into the review, I think I'll go over a bit of what happened. OK we open to an old man, who I presume to be digging clay or other minerals, when he stumbles upon the hand of "The Creature" *cough*Vampire*cough* and he pulls the stake out of his heart which some how brings him back to life? (This movie IS NOT consistent with typical vampire lore/mythology by the way, so if you came for accuracy, back away now) Then we cut to an open road, but first, a few minutes of absolutely gorgeous cinematography...more on that laterAfter about 10 whole minutes we get our first piece of dialogue from the main characters(?), and really, there's not much besides this... Honestly... unless you count inaudible grunts, screaming, yelling, etc as dialogue. So anyways, the couple gets stuck and they try and find a house or whatever so they can get back to their vacation that they never mention besides the fact that there is one. Instead of just going back the road they took (the characters are poorly written to say the least) to searching for a house or other people to help them out. The mentally retarded Mark finds an abandoned house with the pre-mentioned old man who ,obviously, has gotten bitten by the vampire and is bleeding and screaming and whatever. Mark goes back to Female Character and tells her they need to help him. Pretty much after this is an inaccurate, inconsistent, dialog-free, intensely boring, continuous fight scene/ "plot" thing.Mark dies because he is useless, this was the best part of the film because his INTENSE STUPIDITY really built up a lot of hate in me. Now this is were the extreme inconsistency becomes unbelievably obvious. Mark is turned into a Vampire via scratch marks on his leg, then killed from being exposed to the light of an artificial light source. HOWEVER. The old man vampire had previously lit a wood stove to try an "smoke the couple out" How did the light of the fire not kill him? That was a huge plot hole. Then there are other things like, at the very end, Somehow Extremely Brave Female Character, tries to light the house on fire or something and the main vampire STEPS DIRECTLY INTO THE FIRE AND DOESN'T DIE EVEN THOUGH ANOTHER VAMPIRE WAS KILLED SIMPLY BY BEING EXPOSED TO IT. Or Female character repeatedly ripping off pieces of her shirt to cover wounds, only to have her shirt completely repaired in the next time the scene cuts. Just stupid, easy to correct stuff like that... was present through out the entirety of the film. So if you're picky, you won't like it.Also, there's no backstory whatsoever. And sooo many unanswered questions. Why is the vampire there? How did he get there? Why is the old man digging clay? Why does this film exist? Did anyone on production stop and think about the insane amount of plot holes for one second? And finally the cinematography. This is something the film could have done right. This probably could've made the film watchable. However, they decided to use it at completely unnecessary times. For example, in the car when Mark and Female Character are talking, we got all these weird angels and stuff. Like why? I guess they just realized they were good at something then OVER USED IT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. As a quick side note, The Creature costume also sucked. The claw-hand glove things they used were straight out of the Halloween stores. The makeup though, was pretty okay-ishly done, too bad you can't see the creatures face except for on the DVD itself! In summary, the characters were weak, the story was full of plot holes, and the movie was pretty much the most boring thing I've ever watched.
Haven't we seen this film before? FROM THE DARK has almost exactly the same set-up as the overrated IN FEAR, in which a young and bickering couple get lost in the Irish countryside and come up against something or somebody nasty. Thankfully, FROM THE DARK has supernatural elements and is thus interesting because of that, and better than IN FEAR, although it's still not a good film. The problem with these lo-fi movies is that anybody can make them, they're that cheap. Grab a video camera and go out for a drive in your car - you've got a film. Thus, I think the script and direction have to be really special to make films like this work, and they're not that special here. FROM THE DARK feels like it wants to be a found footage type film, with lots of shaky-cam work all the while, but what it is is dull. The script is the culprit here, failing to garner interest by keeping the foe in the shadows for 90% of the running time, and muddling the scenes when it is in the foreground. The opening scene, which brought to mind BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW, was the best part for me. For most of the time we're stuck with annoying and/or whiny characters that the actors can do nothing with. The last third of the film feels particularly repetitive and uninteresting, a low stakes game where the viewer doesn't really care what happens.
I see a lot of horror movies. That one is maybe a low budget, but in my opinion very tense and scary. Camera angles, moving figures on the background, really good acting (considering horror genre and no special effects low budget piece) all this made surprisingly good and tense movie. And i loved those Vurdalaks that you can only see their shape in the night. Usually when they show you the whole monster it looks sucks and ruins the whole movie. And i like the last seconds - that makes you wander what happens next and upgrades the experience from the movie to the next level. Like it. If you are disappointed with this you should check some "Pyramid" or stuff of that kind - full of effects with ridiculous story and idiotic acting. You will understand what i mean.
The movie starts of with a promising note, where a farmer is dragged into the water and thrown out of it by "something" .. and then the story moves back to the beginning of the day where a couple, are driving along to a getaway somewhere distant (made obvious by the GPS they were using). The moment we see them driving into the woods, the story and plot become a bit obvious, considering that this same sequence has been used in many massacre, gore and horror flicks. Also, the story build up of them finding the farm house and the farmer, who is also infected by the "creature", looks good in the beginning, but again, made very obvious later on.The fact that the female protagonist, is this strong headed person, who never loses cool, or feels nervous or screams, is not too normal. She has been depicted to be too strong headed. Also, the fact that the creature is afraid of light is a good attribute, but considering that they are in a farmhouse, with loads of stuff that could and should have been used to be lit, it doesn't seem fair to rely only on a cellphone flash or a torch. The story loses its grip midway, and kind of drags on in the end. This really doesn't make for a very good ending. The movie doesn't seem balanced, and to an extent lacks logical explanation. This movie could have been a very different and a fresh kind of a thriller, but ends up being an average movie, that's is worth a watch but not to be engrossed in.
