Best movie of this year hands down!
Powerful
Perfect cast and a good story
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
This pretty much the way to make a movie, and a movie that is 8/10 is a film, so this is pretty much the way to make a film as well.It is one of those that is best seen without a spoiler, without knowing what will happen, because there are some surprises in store, as a drama becomes a high octane action adventure. In order not to spoil it, I will say it is the story of three convicts on an island, who establish a working relationship with a priest and his young replacement. Like most "cult" films, the characters appear to us as clichés at first, and then emerge into multiple dimensions, pretty much the way people appear to do so if you meet them in real life, so this is very fair.Tracy and Sinatra are gigantic names, and easily recognizable. But while they do superb jobs, they wouldn't be enough to make a movie great. This movie is well written, with many great characters. The situations are believable, and all of the action is believable. In fact, it is probably too realistic to be made today. It is a ride to be taken and not spoiled.
I've always thought this would be a good film to show problem kids in a group home: the film presents great values of friendship, loyalty, love and self-sacrifice (among a group of convicts) and the possibility of "redemption" through these values. The story is melodramatic (bordering on operatic!) but, if you accept the old-fashioned style of movie-making, it really works. As with all classic films, this is one you can watch over and over for the aesthetics as well as for the story. The acting is fine. The ONLY thing in the film that doesn't hold up, in my opinion, is the scene through the jungle with Frank Sinatra carrying the blind girl on his back: it looks a bit comical to a modern viewer.
The Devil at 4 O'Clock is an excellent disaster movie from 1961.Three convicts on their way to Tahiti land on a volcanic island in the South Seas to allow a new priest to alight. They help out at a leper hospital there but a volcano blows its top and the children at the hospital are in danger. Outgoing Father Dunnon and the three convicts team up and go to rescue the children but a footbridge collapses, stranding Dunoon and one of the convicts, who later dies. The children make it to safety and Ol' Blue Eyes, who plays one of the convicts goes back to be with Dunoon and the island finally explodes and sinks into the sea. This movie has excellent special effects, especially the eruption scenes. As well as Frank Sinartra, the cast also includes the excellent Spencer Tracy as Dunoon and Kerwin Mathews (The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Jack the Giant Killer). The Devil at 4 O'Clock is a great way to spend a couple of hours. Excellent.Rating: 3 stars out of 5.
This film is a somewhat entertaining way to spend 2 hours, but it isn't very good, especially considering the talent involved in it (particularly the two major Oscar-winning movie stars in the leads.)In some ways, it feels like two movies spliced together: the first half about the disheartened priest trying to minister to people who have grown to resent him for building a leper hospital on their island and the second half, a cheesy disaster film about that same priest attempting to rescue the patients before the hospital is engulfed by a volcano.Overall, the story is generally contrived and silly (especially once the volcano rescue begins.) The special effects are uneven with the volcano being somewhat unconvincing with various scenes alternating from noisy and smoky to clear and quiet even though only a few minutes have passed and the characters haven't walked but a few yards away. In fact, the volcano effects are akin to those you might see on "Gilligan's Island".In addition, the long line of people on a trek to escape danger was done much more effectively in movies like the "Poseidon Adventure".Generally, the film IS fun to watch; it just isn't particularly good.
