Powerful
It’s an especially fun movie from a director and cast who are clearly having a good time allowing themselves to let loose.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
When I first started watching this I thought, "This isn't very inspired. Oh well, maybe it'll get better when the miracles come along." When Jesus healed a demon possessed boy and said He was speaking to the boy, not the evil inside him, I was thinking, "Okay, the Jesus I know always spoke directly to the demon." When Jesus looked SURPRISED that the boy actually was healed, I thought,"Okay. Now we're in trouble. Bad enough that John the Baptist had to tell Jesus who He was. But now we are messing with the miracles." I stopped watching when Jesus was told John the Baptist was taken prisoner and Jesus gets upset and speaks of "injustice". The icing on the cake was when He said, "Now I know I've not come to bring peace, but a sword." TOTALLY out of context to the point in the REAL Bible when He said that. Enough is enough. My only wish is that I could've given it less than one star. Maybe if I pray for a miracle?
This movie is very different from what you think a movie of the story Jesus would be. I have seen so many that I was a bit unsure of watching it mainly because its the same story over and over again. But I found that the movie shows us a normal guys Jesus that has no super powers and that is only trying to pass a message. They said what I always thought it happened, the followers of Jesus might have stolen the body so people would think Jesus resurrected. He came back, yes he did but not like we were told he did. He came back as a thought, an ideal, and he is still alive and among us because 2000 years later we still talk about him. The kingdom of God is within us.
There are plenty of reviews focusing on one or another aspect of this film, and therein lies the problem. It has flashes of greatness weighted down by a lack of direction. By trying to be all things to all viewers, it ends up being unsatisfying to all. I visited the accompanying website where you have the option to view the same events from three different points of view. That summarizes the problem with the film. On the web site you can choose an angle and stick with it. In the film you cannot, and the attempt to show all three points of view simultaneously leads to nothing but confusion. The relatively high rating is for flashes of quality that will stick with me. The scourging of Jesus is extremely vivid, and will stay with me. The crucifixion likewise gave an image that I found very realistic--I walked away thinking I had better idea what crucifixion was really like. Seeing the character of Jesus show real struggles with his temper also put more of a face to the man--I had a better sense of the Biblical teaching of "fully human" really means. But these insights were few and far between and ultimately couldn't overcome the other problems with the film.
This movie is so blasphemous to any true Christian, it basically removed the spirituality and miraculous teachings of the bible, making it seem like he was just another human, the good thing is that it portrayed the true ethnicity of the people in that era. I wonder if the guy who made this ever read the bible. Watching the final moments its so inaccurate and that I would not be surprised if it was narrated by an atheists or the devil himself. The movie seems to be more of brutality and less on the truth of the bible scriptures and the depth and emphasis and the impact of his miraculous works, watching it they portray that he was just another man, no signs from God that the scripture mentions, just praying for fish, nothing about healing the lepers, raising Lazarus from the dead, what about the Devil taking him to an unusually high mountain, or the angel that met them at the tomb, nothing to do with true spiritual activity of Jesus time, it basically was a slap in the face of the teaching, more like a story told by a scientist who try to explain miracle with silly scientific theories,,, this movie gets major thumbs down.
