Great Film overall
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film
The movie's boxart and title screen looked promising – this looked clearly to be the villain or supernatural force in question – I was sorely disappointed. Instead, what I am treated to is a suspenseful film that passes itself off as survival horror. Granted, at one point the spelunkers face their foe, but it does them little good; instead they are picked off, one by one – at one point when they do make it to the surface (of the cave), they are pulled right back into the abyss by the force that is hunting them. The bulk of the film is spent with a shaky camera; the film would have been good with the story written out, but it quickly escalates into disarray as the spelunkers are lost, and otherwise resort to yelling and screaming which is not only over the top, but is obviously fake. Many parts of the film (in fact) would have been better, if it wasn't for the hysteria by the main characters. Granted, the movie does shine at parts, and I did enjoy it for the first half, but it quickly went downhill as the spelunkers merely repeat what they spent the bulk of the film doing – wandering in a cave, yelling and screaming in hysteria, and otherwise guestimating what their current situation is.The creature does get a few mentions and then some screen time; the film goes so far as to unmask him. However, this creature doesn't otherwise have any background save for an entirely unrelated plot device revealed later in the film. Why is the film so bad? It isn't bad, but it could have also been a lot better; it turns out, as revealed by the DVD, that it was made by college students. This was a student made film – they actually did better than I would expect from college students. The whole film had a 'recovered footage' feel to it, but for some reason it was a bit off – this explains why.I do not recommend this movie – if I didn't enjoy it, you probably won't either.Originally posted to Orion Age (http://www.orionphysics.com/?p=5542).
Heading out to a remote mountain range, a team of spelunkers venturing into a dark, unexplored Russian cave are forced to defend themselves from a terrifying evil haunting the area intent on killing anyone who comes there. This here was a really disappointing and highly underwhelming effort without a whole lot to really like about it. Among the biggest drawbacks here is the fact that there's just nothing interesting at all here in the first half here with this one filled with some of the most utterly bland efforts ever to get a movie more involved in itself. Despite it telling the story of the group coming together and how they're in this particular situation, none of this is in the slightest bit interesting as it goes more for their lame back-story that gets brought up every time out and none of it really offers any kind of enjoyment not only for it being brought up all the time but really just dragging out the first half here to excruciating extremes waiting for something to happen, then it keeps getting brought up once they're in the tunnel anyway which is just an utter bore and makes this so infuriating rather than letting it get more of a hold on who they are. Once they're in the cave itself, this one isn't any better with the absolutely infuriating technique of shooting everything with such extreme close-ups in the already- darkened environment that there's just no way to tell what's going on since we can't see anything going on at all. On top of the darkness, with the entire film covered in fluorescent lighting that gives off the look of dizzying claustrophobia by simply making for an overall disjointed affair not getting anything remotely into this one to tell what's happening as the flashing strobe lights alongside the close-quarter camera-shots further hold this one to a nigh- impossible-to-view series of action scenes that can't tell what's going on. The fact that they don't have even show off the creature at all until the finale is a huge mistake as well since we can't tell what we're supposed to be afraid of while what's supposedly chasing and killing them as the film keeps it as well as the actual gory kills all off-screen to the point of not being able to really get the kind of effectiveness out of them it really should've. This all here holds this one back as the few bright spots here are completely drowned out in this overwhelming sea of negatives as the fact that the cave itself is claustrophobic and chilling makes for a superb setting here to tell this kind of story as the fact that there's constant confrontations with the still-unseen creature makes for a fun time overall here in this kind of setting. As well, the film does get some fun out of the graphic kills when we get to see them, but even with these few positives the flaws are just so much more impactful that they end up overwhelming this one.Rated R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Violence, a clothed sex scene and a shadowy Rape Scene.
Well, I'm glad to say I survived the whole 90 minutes of this film, thinking to myself that this type of film making could be considered good by most people is actually terrifying, I saw on the back of the DVD cover this film was the official selection at two film festivals if I am not mistaken, which is amazing because I don't have anything good to say about it, not one single thing. The story is about a group of cavers going on a caving expedition, then become trapped inside the cave and suddenly find themselves stalked by some weird caveman type freak, and now the cavers must find a way out of the cave before this caveman freak kills them of course. As soon as the action kicks off, you immediately become annoyed with the characters, taking into account that these cavers are professionals, the only thing they know how to do well is breath hard, babble, and scream worse than a bunch of three month babies with 10 pounds of poop in their dippers, and that's how the cast pretends to be scared or horrified call it what you will, and not to mention every time Fred Freakstone appeared the director seem to have had this child like tendency to start shaking the camera so much as if he was laughing like doctor evil and saying scary, and why directors choose to do that these days is beyond me, hold the camera steady and just film the freakin' scene so people can see what is going on, shaking the camera only gives them a headache or motion sickness and if you have epilepsy it can and will induce a seizure. Now, I am deliberately going to spoil the ending, normally I wouldn't do that but the ending of this film will give ample reason to hate it even more than the first 80 minutes, so stop reading if you don't want the ending spoiled, the last two survivors both women wake up in Freakstone's lair stripped bare and covered only in animal skin blankets, they look around trying to find a way out, they fail obviously, then they find a little box with pictures and stuff from a plane crash, then suddenly the freak makes a scary entrance and we clearly see his face for the first time the two women fall flat on the ground out of the excitement, Freakstone looks at one girl then the other the women of course are terrified, then the freak notices a picture of a little boy lying on one of the blankets, which was found in the small box, the two realize that the boy in the picture is actually Freakstone by the way he looks at the picture, the one girl decides call the freak by his real name which proves to be a fatal mistake, then he goes completely psycho, grabs the two women, kills one of them and starts to rape the remaining girl like nobody's business, and the rape scene lasts for at least 20 seconds give or take before the end credits start to role.I apologize for spoiling the ending for those that might have been interested in seeing this film, but as another comment stated you can't spoil something that is already rotten, and I may have saved you the rental or the purchase.
if you are looking to vomit on your screen through disappointment may i courteously point u towards this film. Firstly the camera angles are as if it was filmed by a small weasel edging through the cave with a torch crammed up its ass.Secondly is it me or does this film actually have no storyline.Anybody who argues this film made an ounce of sense to them is clearly deluded. Secondly why is the main "scary" character some retard with a horses head for a hat.If i went out to compose a terrible film i don't think i could do better. \surely the actors must of known it was terrible when they made it. WAIT. Actors is a bit lenient.WARNING: only watch this film if you are: 1. willing to waste 1:30 of your life 2. fancy a laugh with your friends 3.want to see what a weasel would film if you gave it a camcorder in a cave ( sorry cavern )
