Really Surprised!
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
While watching Bloodsport 4, I ended up asking myself multiple times, "Why was this film made?" To this day, I am not sure why. But if I had to guess how Bloodsport 4 got into production, my theory would be that the screenplay writer, suffering from innovation fatigue, stole the script from a third grade student who, in turn, ripped off the formula from the movie "Death Warrant" with Jean-Claude Van Damme. Then the producers, forgetting that the martial arts genre was no longer popular, wrote a cheque worth millions of dollars after three seconds of considered thought. The next step was to hire some really bad actors (either that or they were so embarrassed reading the lines that they ended up sounding like seven year olds pretending to be very serious) and then conceal this fact by tacking on the normally charismatic Daniel Bernhardt as the protagonist Keller. The only problem is that Bernhardt looks as lost in this movie as all of the other actors. Plus the action sequences are that special either. It takes the suspense out of a movie when the bad guy touches Keller's shoulder to indicate to him that now is the time to try out some of those martial arts moves. Then as the movie started entering into its second leg, a strange thing happened: I actually started to miss the sound of Jean-Claude Van Damme's tough guy accent from Death Warrant, which was easily more entertaining than anything in this picture.
The last one (in this case... a low budget franchise) is always bad. Everything is so hollow... even fights! Acting, script... nothing. Daniel looks more like a mannequin fashion model with bad haircut... Fights are so bad... they are hitting the air! Lisa Stothard, Daniel's real life wife... here as a partner and girlfriend... my... she is bad too, I guess they found each other here... I admire Stefanos Miltsakakis, a real BJJ fighter and champion, I expected even more from him, than just bad accented bad guy! The story is supposed to be in LA, but locations look more European... And I was right! It was somewhere in Bulgaria! Not your typical all day replacement for USA. This film is not recommended, only if you have nothing better to do or to watch...
The last movie in the Bloodsport series is also (and predictably) the weakest. Daniel Bernhardt returns once again as Alex Car..oops, sorry as John Keller (!?). Yes, the name of his character changes, for no apparent reason (This also happens in the American Ninja series. My theory is that this IS Alex Cardo, but something happened between 3 & 4 and he had to change his name). This fact aside, Bloodsport 4 : The Dark Kumite, goes the route of the "cop undercover in prison" and handles it pretty well. What's wrong then? Well, the "dark kumite" the title promises is really quite bad: very few fighters, even fewer good fighters, and fights so short you'll miss them if you blink. However, outside of this failed kumite, the movie's alright, and if you've enjoyed Bloodsport 1, 2 & 3, and don't expect too much out of 4, you should check it out.
* Minor Spoilers Below *This movie is hilarious. 95% of the cast is Russian, although it's supposed to be taking place in America. The villain is a guy who calls himself Caesar, lives in a big mansion, and has about 30 female slaves. His sidekick is the prison warden who screams like a maniac if a fighter doesn't kill the other guy. What's interesting is that in Bloodsport 2 and 3 the main character is "Alex Cardo" played by Daniel Bernhardt, and in this one Daniel Bernhardt plays a guy named John Keller, nothing to do with the previous 2 films. What the heck? Let me sum up the plot. John Keller infiltrates a prison where prisoners keep mysteriously disappearing. His job is to find out what's going on. There he meets psychopath Justin Caesar (Ivan Ivanov) and the sadistic warden Preston (Derek McGrath).I would really like to know how this guy got to direct this film. I love this movie so much because I laugh a lot when I watch it. It is truly an unintentional comedy, and I have already recommended it to friends. The best part is two people singing at this kumite and dancing around for a couple of minutes before the fighting begins. Another great thing is the way Caesar talks. This guy is extremely slow, and his voice is sometimes not in sync with his mouth-movements.On an entertainment level, this gets a 7. On a quality level, this get's a -5.
