Even with one of the most beautiful women of all time, this movie is almost unwatchable because of the awful accents.

I liked this movie when I saw it decades ago, before I knew anything about rape culture. Monroe gives her best performance playing an insecure, untalented, sweetly vulnerable singer with dreams of Hollywood. The film is breezily shot and contains solid performances by character actors Arthur O'Connell and Eileen Heckart. And unlike almost everyone here on IMDb, I found Don Murray's antics reasonably entertaining.Watching this again many years later, I'm far more horrified by the story. Once upon a time, movies about boorish men aggressively, even violently, pursuing women, were so common that you never gave it much thought, but I no longer can see the romance in that. Bo's behavior is not just boorish but downright criminal, and even in the fifties it's hard to believe it would be seen, as every character in the movie does, as basically just bad manners. The movie feeds into the idea that you can force a woman to love you by making Monroe ambivalent throughout. This is not unconvincing, because she is established as someone who has been badly treated, but it would make far more sense as a dark drama than as a light romantic comedy. The movie also might work better if the actors were younger. Murray is a 27-year-old man playing a 21-year-old man who acts like a 15-year-old, and Monroe is a 30-year-old woman playing someone whose naivety would be more appropriate to a teenager. My girlfriend, who was curious about Marilyn, was horrified by this movie. But I told her if you want to see a non-sexist Marilyn Monroe movie you are destined to be disappointed.Honestly, if I just turn off the part of my brain that says kidnapping women and forcing them to marry you is a bad thing, I can still enjoy this movie. But in an age where I've heard too many stories of women being harassed and attacked and treated like toys, that's a part of my brain I can no longer turn off.

Being a Marylin Monroe fan I expecting so much more from this film, and admittedly I barely read the synopsis as her being in it was enough for me to watch, however half way through I found myself pressing information on my remote control to find out what was going on, only to see it being described as a 'Romantic Comedy' I was so confused, not once had I laughed and I had yet to see any romance blossom between Marylin's character 'Cherie' and Don Murray who played an obnoxious cowboy called 'Beau' and who I can only describe as a deranged fool who basically began to stalk Marylin, and then even went as far as kidnapping her. Obviously the 50's were completely different to now, but even the dumbest person would not condone this man's behaviour. On occasions I began to zone out just imagining how this sort of film would go down in 2016, I mean there's even one scene where she speaks of marrying her cousin! I feel this fails to please me on a romantic level and if anything it just left me feeling sorry for Marylin's character, and not only that but I found myself becoming very angry just urging someone to punch 'Beau' in the face, so as you can imagine I wasn't best pleased with this crazy ending to a Disappointing film of it's time. I still love Marylin, however even her performance was ropey, her accent was inconsistent and like others have said, why was she so white?! This film left me feeling confused, uncomfortable and dissatisfied. It failed to give me that warm, fuzzy feeling you get after watching a 'romcom' so before you consider watching this, if you're looking for romance reach for something else!

Just saw this Movie for the first time a few days ago. All the yelling gave me a headache. Marilyn looked bloated and unhealthy, especially in the bus when she sat down next to the younger Hope Lange who had a normal looking complexion. All that white makeup made her look like a ghost. After all the film is almost 60 years old. The culture has changed a lot. The boorish but likable hooligan is not exactly in vogue these days. Did I say likable. There's nothing likable about this cowboy. Its just too unbelievable even for 1957. In my opinion, the sweet last scene in this movie is not enough to save the painful 95% of the time taken up but the unbelievable over the top acting & lousy screen play. Sorry but I was not entertained.
