What makes it different from others?
Brilliant and touching
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
You know you're watching a very VERY bad film when you're hoping it'll get better as it goes along but ... THIS DOESN'T! So many things wrong with this film, including very bad (un)special effects but one highlight is watching an undergrad student survive longer than trained, heavily-armed militants! This is only surpassed in wonder by the amazing dialog including "This is my last fruit juice and you can't have it!" ... yes, spoken to a Pterodactyl, machine gun in hand, before BUDDA-BUDDA-BUDDA-BUDDA-SCREEAAAAAAMMM!!! I am glad I watched it though as I now have a film to accompany "The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Masacre" in greatness ...
"...So 'Bulldog' Heinlein got a _daughter_?!" (repeated in disbelief)Hard for me to believe, too. That's not that common a name. Later on, a chick named Zelazny comes to a dramatic end. Zero possibility of coincidence there. Admittedly, it was my third trip through this mess and I was pretty bored, but as I started catching names the alert rang in my head. Professor _Lovecraft_?OK, yeah, there they are, in the "Trivia": A 'who's who' of SciFi / Fantasy authors. At least I'm not the _only_ one who noticed that. It's really too bad that the screenplay writer can't write a gunfight as well as he drops names. From the reviews I'd say "Coolio" is much better known nowadays than those other guys. IMHO Samuel L. Jackson, Wesley Snipes & Gina Torres make far more convincing soldiers. I mean, that "Coolio" guy is _short_!At least "Kate Heinlein" was able to prove that the pterodactyls weren't _totally_ impervious to gunfire by taking out one (of the smaller ones) with a handgun. This is the only linkage I can find between any of the SciFi authors and their namesakes, as RAH's brief naval career was as a gunnery officer, calculating over-the-horizon trajectories for BIG (like 12-inch) guns mounted on ships. I give it two stars, but only because I just sat through three "Carnosaur" movies which were much worse. It doesn't rate any better due to the severe impotence of the firearms in every engagement. I don't care if they _are_ pterodactyls, NO creature can take whole magazines of .223 fire from multiple SpecForces soldiers (who, despite the prejudices of the movie-making industry, _can_ hit what they're shooting at) and just keep flying. Maybe a T.Rex might walk away, maybe, if the shooter was _really_ sloppy, but even he'd be - uh - "peeved" off, and bleeding, not simply _unaffected_. But that's a different movie...I personally wouldn't hesitate to take up an M-16 (full auto) and 2 magazines (60 rounds) against a T.Rex (or an elephant, or a lion) any day. If I couldn't take it out, I'd _deserve_ to die. Same thing for a pterodactyl. They're big, but they're still flesh and bone. Here's Cortez now ("Aztec Rex"). He and his men are going after a pair of T.Rexes - with flintlocks, crossbows, pointed sticks, and swords. That's a little more even. And it looks a LOT better than the ones in "Carnosaur", too. Oh, wait - they've got a cannon, about 4-inch. Nevermind the even match. But a ball from it just _bounced_ off? Here we go again!
The movie is developed on the Armenian-Turkish frontier where a students group(Amy Sloan, and a gorgeous Mircea Monroe, among them) and their professor(Cameron Daddo)undergo an archaeological expedition. In a dormant volcano closes an incredible secret, a nest of pterodactyls eggs, accurately preserved, are ready to hatch . Meanwhile a contra-terrorist team led by a tough commander(Coolio) tracks down Armenian dangerous terrorist. Then Pterodactyls spontaneously attack and the humans try desperately to escape and grisly death happen, while the soldiers use their technological weapons. The movie delivers the goods with hair-rising chills and noisy scares when the Pterodactyls appear savagely stalking its prey and attacking. This is an OK amusing juvenile with thin characters and contrived plot but quite entertaining . It's remarkable for FX recreation the ferocious and carnivorous beast developing a bloodthirsty hunger for human eating. The actors give vigorous physical performances dodging the prehistoric giant birds recreated by the prolific computer generator, as usual. The Pterodactyls, themselves, of course, are the real stars, and they're marvellous terrifying astounding, and quite convincing. The motion picture is professionally produced and directed by Mark L Lester. He's a cool director and producer-American World Pictures- of B movies , his greatest success was during the 80s, when he directed hits , such as ¨Commando, Firestarter, Showdown in Little Tokio and Class of 1984¨ . No for small children for realistic, gory and violent attack scenes. Rating : Average but entertaining.
Like Tremors this is not meant to be art it is fun take it as such. it is a parody of this genre which i happen to like.only downer is loss of the geek and goofy blond so early.dialogue is simple and predictable yet watch it for the fun of it and enjoy.when was the last time you saw pterodactyls? the special effects weren't Star Wars but the flying dinosaurs at least didn't look like they were little clay figures.over all this is a movie to watch on a cloudy afternoon and talk back to the characters.
