Boring
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.
The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
The film take a voyeuristic slant on the material, with lots of lingering shots on the victims bodies.Perhaps this was the goal of the director, but it blends elements of soft-core porn with the murder scenes. Almost a grindhouse horror movie. But since it's based on real murders, there's no camp factor, and is just bad taste. For narrative purposes, it focuses on Ted rather than others around his killing sprees, but superficially. It doesn't try get under the hood and becomes repetitive. It also makes him appear as if he's just a robot doing the killings, one right after the other. But I've seen interviews of him where there's a lot of internal conflict, self-serving fear, narcissism etc.The script and the director takes chances, but don't deliver. The actors I think did their best, but overall it's a big missed opportunity to make this more than a rated R version of a Hallmark movie of the week.
Now, be prepared, because I'm about to save you nearly 2 hours of your life. I can't help but feel that somebody watched American Psycho and decided that it needed to be remade, badly, very badly. What you should have here is a film about Ted Bundy; a sick and twisted man who committed crimes that would make the devil himself lose a boner. It should be a film that is locked inside Bundy's head. A psychoanalysis of a man constantly battling the urge to kill yet never winning and somehow thriving in his defeat. But no, here it is folks, the American Psycho remake I sure as hell don't remembering ordering. I find it incredibly disrespectful to the victims and their families that any murder scenes were shown at all, let alone the fact that they were this graphic. It's torture porn, pure torture porn, the very stuff Bundy ironically blamed for his murders in the first place. The film has no weight to it and is purely a very shoddy attempt at a horror film. All in all, you will gain nothing from this film in relation to Bundy. If you pretend this isn't about Bundy, that the characters are fictional and not genuine people whose families are still no doubt effected everyday by their loss, then what you have is still a below standard horror.
This film looks OK, its entertaining enough, its never boring. It does however come off as a sort of comedy serial killer film. When girls are getting killed to funky disco music and you have cheesy kids saying corny lines like ' gee whizz, stay with us so we can be like a proper family' ' sorry munchkin' etc you really can't take it seriously. There is none of the gravity you would expect from a true story. Its more like a ted bundy's greatest hits compilation. The film basically jumps from one killing to the next and when the killings stop the film ends. It doesn't really want to get bogged down with real drama but it managed to squeeze in a 5 second 'i am spartacus scene' just to give it a semblance of being anything other than a slasher movie, unfortunately for the majority of the film I was reminded of the benny hill routine..the one where he's running after scantily clad women in fast forward. Like I said its entertaining none the less, just feels like something's been lost.
This is a very disturbing film. The rage that was in Ted Bundy (Michael Reilly Burke) was not easy to watch. I don't think they could have found anyone better than Burke to do the character. Smooth and easy to the ladies until he got them where he wanted and then he was maniacal in his treatment. He had a fetish for necrophilia, as he wanted his women almost dead as he raped them. His smooth manner even enabled him to keep the guards off guard after he was arrested facilitating an escape. He managed to escape twice before he had his date with Old Sparky. Even a plea to help solve all the murders he committed, would not save him.He was probably the worst serial killer in history. He was certainly a disgusting man.
