I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
It's an amazing and heartbreaking story.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
"First Born" is a clichéd but watchable thriller.Laura (Shue) is a dancer who gets pregnant and moves into a country home with her husband (Steven Mackintosh). After the pregnancy, she starts getting post-partum depression. She uses (Tom Cruise's) advice to not go on drugs. She starts seeing and believing things that aren't real.Elisabeth Shue puts in a good performance, but the script and plotting are lacking. It's basically the same scene for 90 minutes. Laura goes crazy and no believes her, Ad Nauseum. The ending, while interesting, can't bring the movie up to snuff in time.Overall, "First Born" is a decent movie, but the script, idea and execution could've been way better. For more insanity, please visit: comeuppancereviews.com
Poorly written script, and directors art visions about women,I don't want to recommend this, slow, poor, disturbing, but is not as different as they says.Seen it before parts put together without any skills.Unforunatelly Elizabeth Shue plays with one boring face in the whole movie.Laughable dialogs makes the situation worst, but not in a good way, cause this movie, and it's director has not real sense of humor.Feels like the movie is almost 150 minutes long, while not,but feels like that long.Officially this movie has not(V)or(TV)-sign,or rating by IMDb.At this moment, but I will not wonder if years after this will get it,cause it worth that.1,2/10-not worth watching.
***MAJOR SPOILER ALERT*** Really a case of severe post natal depression more then a "Rosemary's Baby"-like imitation the made for TV movie "First Born" is about a young woman Laura Davis, Elisabeth Shue, who goes off the deep end into La-La land when her pet dog Harper is accidentally poisoned after eating rat poison that she planted in her house.Being already pregnant Laura's deep guilt over Harper's death leads to her feeling that she won't be a good and caring mother to her soon to be born child. This leads Laura to conjure up all kinds of crazy scenarios about her being cursed, or hexed by evil spirits, in this case witch's, that not only drives her batty but also everyone else she comes in contact with including her husband Steve, Steve Mackintos. After her baby is born Laura starts to feel that it's not really her's in an obvious excuse to shirk any responsibility in properly taking care of it. This is for Laura to have and excuse in anything that happens to her child, a girl, being the results of supernatural forces not her own inability, due to her post natal depression, in being good a mother. The film goes on and on with a number of crazy incidents, conjured up by Laura, where the baby's life is always in danger when it fact it's not. The only one who's a threat to Laura's baby's health, or even life, is Laura herself. The worst thing by far that Laura does is accuse the kind caring nanny Mrs. Kasperian, Kathleen Chalfant, of trying to either kidnap or murder her new born child. This accusation by Laura is so ridicules that even the local police refuse to even entertain, much less act on, it. Coming up with stories about rats and sinister and bloated baby dolls doesn't help Laura either in making anyone believe her. All this causes Laura's mother, Blain Brown, to travel to New York from the other side of the country, California, to come over and look after her grandchild since Laura seems totally incapable of doing it. When the movie ends you get to see just how incapable of being a mother Laura really is!
The most boring film of 2007, and one of the most boring films of all time.First Born starts slowly and then...becomes even slower...and then Zzzz. What!? Oh, I'm still commenting. Yes, well what can be said...a seemingly normal woman (Laura) goes completely insane after giving birth to her first child, a girl, if that matters. She is too wealthy to get any serious attention, so everyone lets her aberrations slide, not wanting to confront her, especially those who could be of most help to her.No matter what is done to assist Laura, things just keep getting more and more out of control. Even as her personality is making major changes (she starts smoking) no one stops and says; "Hey, you're acting weird and freaking everyone out, including yourself." Any real help comes too late and still no one is confronting the real issue that Laura is insane, not depressed, insane. So what happens? She buries her baby girl alive (thinking it was a doll), and forgets that she even had a baby. So now she is completely delusional and forever insane. The End.Really. The End.
