Another day, another cheap horror film from the drug store bargain bin! I'd never heard of EVIL BREED: THE LEGEND OF SAMHAIN, but I gladly plunked down my $3.99 for it as soon as I saw retired porn star Jenna Jameson's name above the title (yes, I'm shallow). Before watching "Evil Breed" I read up on it here on good ole IMDb and I learned that the film went through multiple behind-the-scenes problems during its production, and that though it was intended to be an all-out, over-the-top gross out gore fest the film was heavily edited (against the director's wishes) prior to its release. So in the end we're left with a film that's a mere hint of what it might have been....which is a shame, because without the gore (which was supposed to be glorious), the film runs a scant 78 minutes and there sure isn't much of a plot to keep the viewer involved. Our story: a group of annoying American college students and their instructor are on a trip to the Irish countryside, where activities apparently consist of staying in a creepy old cottage in the woods and attempting to have sex with one another. Their hostess, former adult video queen Ginger Lynn (whose Irish accent comes and goes depending on what scene you're watching) fills them in on some of the area's local legends (Druid cults, the ancient festival of Samhain, human sacrifices, yadda yadda yadda), with particular emphasis on the story of Sawney Bean and his clan of inbred cannibal cave dwellers... whose decendents, of course, are rumored to still roam these very woods. Anyone wanna bet five bucks who our unlucky tour group will eventually run into? While exploring the forest, a pair of the students finds a seemingly deserted castle, which is of course inhabited by the aforementioned mutants. These guys are so deformed by centuries of inbreeding that they resemble the members of GWAR. From there...well, hackings, slashings, decapitations, and bad acting are the order of the day. The group is picked off one by one until only the unlikable "final girl" is left and she has to escape from the cannibal stronghold by herself. Will she make it out in one piece? Do you really have to ask? There seems to be a lot of hate for this movie on IMDb but I thought it was a stone cold hoot. I certainly wouldn't recommend renting this one just to see the various porn stars, because most of their appearances (other than Ginger Lynn's) are limited to brief cameos (Jenna Jameson may get top billing, but she's only in the movie for about four minutes, two of which are taken up by her death scene). The gore, as previously mentioned, is not as hardcore as originally intended, but there are still some good bits to be had. The one absolutely EPIC must-see scene involves Jameson's character being carved up by one of the mutants... who reaches into her chest and pulls out one of her silicon breast implants, then stares at it quizzically while squeezing it like a dog's squeaky toy. I can honestly say that's something I've never seen in a movie before! Haha.Okay, so this film is obviously not a horror classic by any means, but for $3.99, "EVIL BREED" was a decent night's cheesy, sleazy entertainment. Obsessed fans of Jenna, Ginger, and Chasey Lain may want to add an extra star or two to my rating up above. Hopefully somewhere down the road we'll get an uncut version of this flick, so we can see it according to director Christian Viel's original sicko vision. A couple of the uncut death scenes are available on the DVD as bonus features, and judging from those, I can only imagine how nasty the original version must've been! What a shame...

This started bad, got worse, and by the time the girl attacked the old lady at the end i literally wanted to take the DVD to the person we borrowed it off and choke the C**T to death with it. Avoid this film, a little bit of good cinematography and some naked shots, would be almost acceptable if i was 14 and had not seen Jenna Jameson naked a million times. If anyone feels the need to watch this film, i would strongly recommend you spend the time more appropriately, as an example i would say trying to cram a Lego house into your bum with no lube would be a good start. I hear that this film was not the original version, i would very much like to view the original, as it seems that this cut version is devoid of all plot, and apparently most of the nudity, can someone please tell me how i can get in touch with Christian Viel he owes me an hour of my life back!

Evil Breed: The Legend of Samhain is set in Ireland (although shot in Canada) where Karen Douglas (Bobbie Phillips) a teacher from an American college of historical studies & five assorted students have flown to & rented a house to study, well the historical background of the area. Her boyfriend Paul (Howard Rosenstein) also turns up. The first day there & local caretaker (of what exactly?) Gary Saxon (Simon Peakcock) warns not to venture into the woods or leave the trial, no-one takes any notice which in the long run turns out to be a huge mistake as there is in actual fact the last mutant wart covered inbred relatives of the infamous cannibal Sawney Beane (look the name up on Wikipedia or the IMDb's 'Trivia' section for this since I can't be bothered to explain the legend) running around looking for their next meal & suitable breeding stock...Released under the simple title of Samhain here in the UK this Canadian production was written & originally edited & directed by Christian Viel & I say originally because according to the IMDb the film had large re-shoots with no input from Viel at all & not only was it partially re-shot but the original rough cut was edited down from just over 90 minutes to just under 80 minutes although Viel's original cut has apparently been circulating around the internet for several years which is frustrating because that with it's extra nudity & extreme gore sounds like the better film, the IMDb also says that a fight between Richard Grieco & a mutant was removed from the DVD (the only version commercially available at the moment), Mark Borchardt was cast in the film & his scenes were shot but again none appear in this 'finished' version & if that wasn't enough the attack on Barbara after she leaves the shower was also cut almost in it's entirety. After learning things like this it's perhaps no surprise that watching films can sometimes be a frustrating experience, whether you like Evil Breed: The Legend of Samhain or not who do you blame? Viel? It seems he had no input into the finished cut. The people who messed around with it? They were probably just trying to make a better film surely? Maybe it's just a case of too many cooks spoil the broth. I have to admit that I am slightly worried by the fact that Viel doesn't know what a cottage is, again look up the definition on Wikipedia if you don't believe me because the house the Americans stay at is anything but a cottage even though they keep referring to it as such. It's more like a mansion for gods sake! Also one character says to his girlfriend that she is reading a map backwards, how on Earth can you read a map backwards? You can have a printed map upside down for sure but not backwards, it's an impossibility! One more thing, Haggis is a Scottish dish not Irish! Getting over the backwoods dumb Irish stereotypes & some glaring issues that show the writers have no idea about the local area then I suppose Evil Breed: The Legend of Samhain is an OK teen slasher flick with some pretty memorable wart covered mutant cannibal monsters. Like many horror films you can split it into two sections, the opening forty minutes is dull, dull, dull. The last forty minutes really gets going with some decent stalk 'n' slash moments & half decent gore before the final two minutes ruins it all with an ending that I think is supposed to be a twist but makes absolutely no sense at all.Director Viel (& whoever did the re-shoots) do a decent job, it looks alright if a little cheap on occasion. For instance the opening sequence contains stock footage of Ireland which seems to have been edited from a VHS tape as the resolution is low & at one point you can actually see some tape damage as a thin line travels up the screen! Disappointingly Viel's version is apparently gorier than this but even so this has some decent blood & gore in it, a dismembered body is roasted above an open fire, a woman is ripped in half, there are decapitated heads, there are stabbings, a woman has her breast implant ripped out & a mutant tries to eat it & memorably some gets a machete up his bum & then the mutant proceeds to shove his hand up the new larger orifice & pull his intestines out which make lots of farting noises & then strangles the guy with them! I wouldn't call it scary although the scenes set at night & in the mutant liar (which remind me of similar scenes in The Hills Have Eyes II (2007)) are quite nice if unoriginal.Technically the film looks a little cheap at times but it's passable, just. Set in Ireland but shot in Montreal in Quebec in Canada & anyone familiar will Ireland & it's geography will be able to tell. There are four major porn stars in this, Ginger Lynn Allen, Chasey Lain, Taylor Hayles & Jenna Jameson who all have literally 100's of adult film credits between them. With a cast made up largely of porn stars you can probably guess the acting isn't that good.Evil Breed: The Legend of Samhain is a passable time waster if you don't go into it expecting too much, well it would actually help more if you went into it expect nothing. The first half is poor while the second half is pretty decent, there's one or two fairly impressive gore effects though Viel obviously has no idea how to write a film set in Ireland.

Did they use their entire budget paying the porno stars or what?!?Sound effects, background music and the editing in general was so bad you'd think some 12-year-old wanna-be made the film. Most of the acting was good considering the script... the "innocent virgin" played her part really well. The mutants look really cool and this actually could have been a really cool flick with the right brain behind the wheel... but, unfortunately for all involved, that's not the case.Turn Left was made better than this movie and those guys didn't even have any money!!! Good thing I didn't rent the movie myself!
