A lot of fun.
As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
i like Gwyneth Paltrow she is a good actress i checked this film out because of her but sadly it failed to keep me hooked.this was based on a real life story of poet Sylvia Plath now i don't want to go in details about how accurate this film was but i will talk about what was good and bad about this film adaptation of a real life person.i will not reveal the plot here but i will say it is a depressing film and most of the characters are sad specially Sylvia portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow she did her best here giving all the emotions with her acting methods she cries a lot here all the pain shes was going through you can feel it.the film and the story were both good but the biggest minus point was the acting of Daniel Craig this guy is the king of overacting i swear the whole film he was shouting and going berserk and ruined the film experience for me.i liked the way this film was shot the cinematography was amazing if only the script and cast were better this film could have been better it had potential.this film explores Sylvia's life it is a biographical but a lot of moments are over the top here it is more of a sad love story then a Biographical film then all the unnecessary sex scenes comes, the film runs good for half an hour then tries too hard to fall into a boring, sad erotic movie and fails to connect with the audience.i hated this film specially Daniel Craig this is the same guy who also murdered the James bond films he is not a good actor at all Gwyneth Paltrow is the only good thing about this film and she looks quite stunning and beautiful here even when smoking cigarettes.Overall Sylvia 2003 is a waste of time and money my rating is 3/10.Skipp It
it is an instrument. to discover Sylvia Plath silhouette. to remember her work. for see a drama with strange ambitions. or, only, for admire Gwyneth Paltrow in a role far to be special. film about the fight of a young woman against reality, it has gift to present a social case more than slices of a biography. this fact is not bad. but the absence of poetry - Sylvia Plath was a writer not a common housewife makes things not easy. and the mountain becomes mouse. it is an interesting movie but its way is not inspired. literature circle seems be only detail or an ornament. the tragedy of Plath existence is out of nuances. and the message is satisfactory. it is a sketch, not bad, not well. only sketch based on fragile memories about a legend of XX century great poetry. is it enough ?
The life of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes was a complicated relationship. They were both poets. Sylvia was far more brilliant but totally tortured by her own inner demons. Perhaps, she would have been treated today for mental illness with counseling and medication. Sadly, Sylvia's suicide is fact and not fiction. She was still brilliant and promising but tortured by her inner demons of jealousy about her husband. Perhaps she had postpartum depression as well. Gwyneth Paltrow's performance of Sylvia Plath is a solid performance but it's weakened by poor writing. Daniel Craig does very well in playing her husband. I do enjoy seeing Blythe Danner in playing Sylvia's mother. Poetry is perhaps the most difficult of all writing and takes various forms. It's not surprising that Sylvia Plath had done her finest work solo but she was a gentle soul. I enjoyed seeing Sir Michael Gambon as her landlord. Like I wrote, I felt better improved writing could have helped turn this film into an Academy Award nominated performance by Gwyneth Paltrow. Also, the film was shot on location in New Zealand rather than England or America.
Not really disappointing viewing, given I was well aware of the critical and commercial caning this copped on release, but as a fan of Plath I was left wistfully wanting more. A more appropriate title for Christine Jeffs' film would have been "Ted and Sylvia" as we only pick up poet Sylvia Plath's (Gwyneth Paltrow) life from the time when she met fellow poet Ted Hughes (Daniel Craig). The film charts the passionate yet rocky relationship of the literary couple, with Hughes' extra-marital affairs and Plath's mental instabilities causing the marriage to breakdown. We all know how it ends of course, with Plath's suicide."Sylvia" has much of the same problems that the recent John Maybury film looking at Dylan Thomas' life and loves, "The Edge Of Love", had. At times its beautiful and haunting, but really just inconsequential overall. We spend so much time with Plath and Hughes but we never really get close to either of them. Plath was not just a tragic talent, her poetry and novel are filled with disturbing, blunt images but also a great raw passion for experience and life. The film becomes a dreary look at adultery rather than showing us anything new about Plath, or her relationship with Hughes. Paltrow and Craig are rather good in their roles, but are let down by the writing (how ironic!)The film goes around in circles but we never really get anywhere.
