Excellent, Without a doubt!!
Better Late Then Never
Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
When Debbie Strand is sent to live with her elderly grandmother it is the easiest thing she could have done until things go terribly bad. Her grandmother is too controlling for Debbie and will not let her have a life. Debbie had enough and beats her to death with her cane. Now her eyes are set on her new teacher, Mr. Rinaldi. She finds out that his girlfriend is out of town and erases all her messages on his answering machine. She will stop at nothing to get him even if it means murder. Now the easiest thing for her to do is to kill for what she wants.Rose McGowan didn't go thru the bad plastic surgery when she made this movie, so she's still hot.The film isn't.
Been down this variable path (with 'Poison Ivy' and 'The Crush') plenty of times before and the pulpy straight-to-video effort 'Devil in the Flesh' lacks its own vision to set itself from this over-cooked femme fatal genre. The shiny red apple for the teacher was only the beginning for what was about to come. Think of the Police's song "Don't stand so close to me", but with this story the affection isn't shared. Its school girl after teacher, but teacher has his eyes only on his girlfriend. He seems oblivious to the advancements, or just shakes them off. It's disposable entertainment that's largely saved by an intoxicatedly cunning vixen performance by the voluptuous Rose McGowen. You can't go wrong with McGowen. She's delectable even in an unstable frame of mind! Actually she's too good for such second-rate material. Starring opposite of her is a solidly likable Alex McArthur as the object of her obsession; Mr. Rinaldi the English teacher. He presents a believable performance that doesn't really aggravate or get you criticizing his actions. However I can't say the same about some unthinkable plot developments. Unconvincing is an understatement. It's simply plotted, but its brief format doesn't feel structured and unevenly tries to balance too much (quite quickly) by the end. The back of my video case insists " delivers non-stop thrills." I don't think so. The direction is automatically sourced and suspense is poor with only the confrontations with an excellent Peg Shirley as the religiously heavy-handed grandmother and McGowen's Debbie as the only real sparks. Underneath the surface is a coldness and a nasty side, but it never takes a risk on it. The music score is better, as it's expressively understated, but rich to the lurking sensual flair and ominous charges waiting to open up. It paints it well enough in the moodily haunting opening credits. A so-so thriller.
Debbie: Spare the rod, spoil the child - is that the idea? Is this how you raised my mother? No wonder she was such a f*cking bitch! Debbie(hitting her grandmother with a cane): Oh, I'm sorry, grandmother. Did I hurt you? Let me make it better! Fiona: Please, have mercy... Debbie: F*ck mercy! You don't have any mercy. My mother never had it, my father didn't have it, and I don't have it. It's a family thing!Typical story of a girl from a dysfunctional family. Rose McGowan(Debbie) is place with her grandmother after her mother and a teacher, who was involved with mother, mysteriously die in a fire.Grandmother (Peg Shirley) and Debbie don't mesh well as she is a hyper-Christian. Soon bodies start piling up as Debbie has her eyes on another teacher.Sherrie Rose plays the teachers girlfriend and provides some breast baring blazing-hot love scenes. For Rose McGowan fans only.
I saw this late night on cinemax and thought it to be soft-core because the digital cable guide said it was, but found out that it was basically just a movie with all the bad acting of late night cinemax. Don't really understand why the little added twist that the writers threw in just to come full circle and completely fulfill the cheeziness meter of the movie was used. I think a monkey with a pen could have matched that ending. Sort of interesting knowing that the main actress is twisted enough in real life to marry marilyn manson, but other than that id say this movie had nothing but guilty pleasures ala springer. So if you find yourself alone on a Saturday night because your woman (or man) is at home with the flu and just happen to see this come on hbo or cinemax (i couldn't even imagine trying to stomach any kind of edited version of this thing, then give it a try until you find yourself either asleep or wishing for the flu yourself.
