Excellent, Without a doubt!!
As Good As It Gets
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
The nuts-and-bolts origin story in 'Green Lantern: First Flight (2009)' is over and done with in literally the first five minutes and, consequently, we don't ever get to see our hero come to terms with or get accustomed to his newfound powers and accompanying responsibilities. Luckily, the former are simple to understand from an audience's perspective and the latter are explored somewhat throughout the rest of the piece, with the implication that the initial escapades of the protagonist don't involve many heroics at all, as much of the movie is dedicated to what essentially amounts to Hal Jordan's 'trial run' as a member of the Green Lantern Corps - a sort of intergalactic police force. This allows for emphasis to be placed on him finding his place within said organisation, though not too much screen-time is spent on this and, thus, there's not all that much development for our main character. More time is spent on an intrigue plot that arises surrounding a mysterious 'yellow element', one which could be a threat to the universe. It's this that takes us on a trip across the universe and it is actually pretty interesting, with only the occasional exposition dump dampening its impact. There's a delightful plethora of pretty places far removed from both our planet, though most things still stick to an earthly logic, and the usual DC aesthetic. Despite the opportunity for it, there's never any sense of awe or wonder when we see these alien sights, though. It's weird that Hal Jordan isn't shocked when he sees things he's never seen before (the first time he sees an alien, he runs towards it and only queries why it can speak English). It is refreshing to see unique character and world designs, however. It would just be better if our lens emoted a little more, whether or not that would be more traditional, so that we could have some grounding to how amazing it's supposed to be, at least initially. Then, when we and the character become accustomed to these new vistas and otherwise otherworldly visages, everything can become mundane and the universe can feel as lived-in as our hometown, while still remaining as visually distinct as it does. The narrative makes mostly good use of its settings and tells a tale that, while somewhat contrived, is genuinely tense in places and relies on believable character motives. The dynamics on display feel real, though a little 'operatic' and a bit on-the-nose, right up until its slightly 'villain for the sake of a villain' finale. Here, the subtle nuances go out of the window and previous motivations seem to fall away so that a big space-battle can ensue. Still, it's exciting, well-animated and provides some spectacle to end on. Overall, the flick is entertaining and well-paced. The voices suit the characters and the animation is pretty good, though not as stylish or fluid as some of the other animated DC fare. It's an enjoyable movie that doesn't dive too deep into the character but is a decent adventure featuring him. 6/10
This movie has me loving this DC Comics super-hero Green Lantern. I like to say that seven characters had been given the title of "Green Lantern." Of course, the ring of the first Lantern Alan Scott was fashioned by him, and its power came a magic lantern he had found. By 1959, the character became the sci-fi superhero comic fans know today - Hal Jordan, a pilot who was given a green ring from a dying alien, who is part of an intergalactic police force the Green Lantern Corps. Now Hal is the first human to be a member of the corps.I have watched this film on Netflix and I found it an awesome take on that origin story. This movie has great animation, excellent casting, thrilling sci-fi action and a shocking surprise. I thought Victor Garber voiced a convincing Sinestro. Overall I love this film from beginning to end. And I also love the live-action Green Lantern movie too.
Somehow, this movie, in less time and lesser budget, showed a good Green Lantern story than the live-action one. Green Lantern: First Flight has every that fans of the comics would want. Action, character development, a decent villain, and an awesome hero to root for. I'm not going to spoil anything here, but if I had to pick between Green Lantern: First Flight and the live-action Green Lantern I would pick Green Lantern: First Flight in a heartbeat. My only complaints are that while I know that the regular running time for DC Universe Original Animated Movies is 77 minutes, but I wish that this was longer or there would be a very strong indication that Hal Jordan's adventures would continue. Sadly, I guess Green Lantern: First Flight wasn't that successful enough to warrant a sequel. But still, I recommend Green Lantern: First Flight to anyone who either loves Green Lantern or DC Comics. I promise you'll love it.
Recap: Test pilot Hal Jordan is out on a routine mission that ends in a very odd way. He is recruited to an interstellar police force called the Green Lanterns. However, humans is not held in the highest regard and Hal is only admitted if he goes under the tutorship of veteran Lantern Sinestro. Sinestro is on the hunt for criminals that plans to create a weapon that threatens the entire universe. But Sinestro's methods is questionable, brutal and suspiciously unethical in Jordan's mind.Comments: An animated action movie that follows every standard steps and rather regretfully doesn't add anything new. It is actually so predictable it becomes boring, and as it is animated, not even the effects brightens the picture enough for it to become entertaining. It's highly rated, and maybe for fans this has something that me, as someone not familiar to the Green Lantern before, misses. But I can't see this movie recruiting any new fans anytime soon. 4/10
