I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Excellent adaptation.
A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."
This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
I need to begin by saying that Guantanamo was and remains to be a huge disgrace for the United States of America and everything most of us feel we represent, things like freedom, human dignity, and the rights of man. This torture chamber dreamed up by Dick Cheney goes against all of that. Whatever problems I had with this film don't change the fact that I think this prison is disgusting, illegal, and immoral."My parents went to Pakistan and they saw a bride for me," are the first lines spoken by Asif in the film. And the bride? Perhaps a first cousin as is all too common amongst Pakistanis in flagrant disregard for the health risks their children will incur. Or perhaps she is a child also under the complete control of family. He decides to marry her after four days. OK, I think Asif really has to ask himself if England is a place where he feels comfortable living.I'm not sure that turning this into a drama was the best road to take to Guantanamo, an illegal prison that I have opposed from the beginning. Using actors and putting this into a phony documentary format places it more alongside "This is Spinal Tap" than any of the better films in this genre. I am aware that documentaries made with nothing but archival footage can lie as well as in a dramatic recreation but I found it difficult to see the line in this between fact and fiction, where fiction is hearsay and the testimony of the four boys.I still don't know if 100% of this was a dramatization or if they used any news clips. Dramatization or prevarication? The film lost any sense of verisimilitude once American soldiers were introduced because evidently the director didn't bother to ask any in the know about just what sort of uniforms and insignias American soldiers wear. Even the American accents were phony. When they arrived at Guantanamo the Marines were the worse Marine impersonators ever.A few unanswered questions: How did all of the men die who were in the truck? It looked as if at least half of those who entered had perished inside yet they don't say how.
A group of Muslim men innocently went on a tourist trip from UK to Pakistan, but they accidentally finished in Afghanistan, where they accidentally traveled to the frontline, where they were accidentally captured. Bad Americans tortured them and then flew them over to Guantanamo where they were tortured even more, but they remained defiant to the very end, said nothing, stayed true to each other and became even more devoted Muslims in the end.I find all that strangely similar to "Rambo: First Blood" where Stallone has also innocently traveled to that small American town where he was accidentally involved in trouble and was captured by that bad American sheriff. Then he was tortured, but he also said nothing, remained braveful and defiant and has even managed to escape and exact some revenge on his tormentors. OK, I guess we will have to wait for "The Road to Guantanamo 2" to see how these brave, innocent Muslims exacted revenge on those bad American interrogators.
The main issue I have with this film is that it presents itself as a documentary. It is not a documentary and this is not journalism. It is entertainment. That immediately destroys all credibility in the eyes of those who have an unflinching religious loyalty to whatever national or Christian symbol you want to use. When I sat down to watch this I thought perhaps I would get to see a film that would make even the most die hard American Good Old Boy sit down and really start asking some questions. Unfortunately it is just going to add more fuel to their self righteous fires. Through an hour and a half I saw ONE scene where a member of the United States military acted like a reasonable human being. I mean come on guys. This kind of film is not going to change any minds. If you are honestly concerned with educating people this is not the film to show them.
I was truly angry, what are American troops doing in east especially in Guantanamo prison!!! And the saddest thing is that the bush him self lies about peoples inhaled inside Guantanamo without any evidence of their lifestyle and that American forces are lie about of their occupation is joust sick!!! American politic and people working for American government should be helled in Guantanamo!!! Not innocent one!!!I think this movie should be played in many countries and shown to a lot of peoples so they can truly see what is going on the Guantanamo prison! All respect and regards to those three men who were helled in Guantanamo prison and all those who are innocent in! It is better to free a guilt person than to helled a innocent one!!! Americans shame on you!!!
