I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

The movie really just wants to entertain people.

Aside from a couple of low budget genre films, this has to be about the worst movie I have ever seen. Here is the breakdown:Directing = F Prince does not know what to do with a camera. Possibly George Lucas might have been able to do a worse job directing this.Cinematography= B There are a number of sweet shots in this film.Costumes = A I want to own every outfit I saw Prince wearing this film!Script = F Dumb, dumb dumb. Wrecka Stow? I wouldn't have laughed at that when i was in grade school (and yes, I get it. Who could not get it?). I am just absolutely baffled by that scene. The rest is not much better. The script kills the film's ability to be funny, and its ability to draw you into the romance. Chemistry = B & F Prince and his sidekick have a chemistry that really works well. Given funny material, they could have really made some movie magic. A bad script pretty much sinks them, however. The chemistry between Prince and the women in the movie is nearly non-existent. The phone conversation scene was good, but that is just about it. Other than that, the romantic connection seemed awkward and forced. so B for Prince's chemistry with the male co-star, and an F for his chemistry with the 2 females.Acting = B Not bad acting really. All the main characters (except the older woman prince wants for her money at the beginning) do a good job. conclusion: Atrocious script and terrible directing sink this flick. Good acting, chemistry, and soundtrack cannot save it.

***POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING.*** I first saw this film when I was around 13 or 14, during my Big Prince Fandom Phase (I still consider myself a fan, and I love his music, but I am nowhere near as obsessive about it as I used to be.) People have called this movie "surreal." I would say that this is an understatement, but in a *good* way. As much as Prince and Tricky's bantering, the black-and-white cinematography makes this film the truly unique viewing experience that it is. And as other comments have pointed out, some of the quotes have become catch-phrases amongst the folks who have seen this film ("WRECKA STOWE!") (Seriously, where *does* one obtain a Sam Cooke album?) **now for the spoiler** And yes, I did cry at the end. After the lighthearted comedy that encompasses most of the action, I was not at all expecting what ended up happening. Despite this, I feel that Under The Cherry Moon should be appreciated for what Prince was trying to do with it. This movie was not well-accepted or well-understood by the critics and the viewing public, and that's their loss.

I watched "Under the Cherry Moon" last night for the first ever time, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm surprised it has such bad reviews and is considered such a turkey by most critics. I guess at the time most people wanted Prince to come out with another "Purple Rain" type movie. Prince is a great physical comedian in this movie, I was surprised just how much as was laughing throughout it at his and Jerome Benton's antics. Prince clearly is having a whale of a time here - and his over-the-top narcissism throughout is clearly meant as tongue-in-cheek. This is one of those quirky, odd, entertaining, screwball movies that has a real cult feeling to it, and definitely major rewatchability factor. Prince did a very good job directing this at the age of 27 (which I also wasn't expecting) and uses the songs off his "Parade" LP to excellent effect at the right moments and the right scenes. I love the "Girls and Boys" sequence with everyone doing that 80s arm-waving dance that Prince starts off on the piano. Kristin Scott Thomas is absolutely lovely in it - long time to go before her big break in "The English Patient". Steven Berkoff plays a similar villain that he did a few years earlier in "Beverly Hills Cop". Love the scene where Prince is trying to make it up with Scott-Thomas, and he does this by sitting in total silence at the back of his car with his shades on. Will have to try that technique someday. Shame, Jerome and Prince could've ended up being the modern-day screwball farce pair, if they'd made more films together.

This movie is nowhere near as bad as it's reputation. The acting is better in this movie than in most daytime soap operas. Prince & Jerome Benton are actually quite funny. That may be due to the fact that they're friends in real life. The worst part about this movie is the way Prince dresses in most of it. The soft white jumpsuit with the (hijab-like) headpiece was terrible. Prince overacts towards the end of the film. The jokes are somewhat ethnic without trying to be. The scene that comes to mind is when Tricky is suggesting that he could wed Mary Sharon. Christopher implies that if Tricky even approached Mary, the police would lock him up. Christopher gets into some dialog about being light-skinned(butterscotch) and Tricky being dark-skinned(chocolate) and how they have different fathers. This is to suggest that he wouldn't bail Tricky out of jail once he's locked up. Trickey informs Christopher that he'll "Slap the waves out yo head!". Prince & Jerome Benton were "Bling Bling" before the "Bling Bling Era" came into fashion during the mid 90's. Overall, the movie is a 6.5 on a 1-10 scale.
