That was an excellent one.
Sick Product of a Sick System
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
I never read the book. So I am reviewing the movie based on no prior knowledge of the storyline. Wow. This is a bad, bad movie, and I think it's the fault of Tucker Max.Tucker Max is the writer of the book of the same name that became a best seller. Apparently he took those profits and made the movie because his name was displayed in large letters as the producer in the credits. He is also listed as the screenwriter. I'm guessing his success went to his head and he thought he knew how to make movies, but he doesn't. Because he was the boss, no one would - or could - tell him that his script was terrible and his director wasn't getting the job done. What we're left with is an attempt at crude, college humor. Single guys drinking, chasing women, and all the stereotypical jokes that you would expect. The problem is that the jokes are not funny. The three lead characters are incredibly unlikable.Yes, I understand this movie is supposed to be about redemption, so the characters are supposed to be unlikeable at first. However, there is nothing to like about these guys. There is no glint of morality or decency that leads you to believe the guy isn't as bad as he seems. So, by the end of the movie, you just really don't care what happens to them. This is what other reviewers mean when they say there is no character development.Almost every other ratings website gives this movie an extremely low - if not their lowest - rating. I have no idea how IMDb has this averaged out at 5.3 out of 10 stars. My only guess is that Tucker Max is paying people to log on and give excessively high ratings. Since the story is supposed to be autobiographical, he seems to be the kind of person that would do something like that.
I'll admit, i haven't read the book. I'm not a fan of autobiographies, but I do enjoy a good biopic (if it's less than 3 hours and not about a musician) Looking at the Wikipedia page and this page, it would seem that this movie was going to be horrible. For me, it wasn't. The dialogue with the constant insults, over-enunciated big words, and imaginative physical punishments was pretty fun(ny). I found myself laughing more from a "what did he just say to her?" HAHAHAHA As I've suggested it to some friends, my encouragement has been "man, the stuff they say to each other and other people is the funniest part." Okay, Jesse Bradford's Drew as the stereotypical college geek with an extensive vocabulary who feels compelled to say words greater than 3 syllables with Malkovich-ian enunciation did get on my nerves. Tucker Max's fetishes and excesses are played to humorous effect, but the plot is still predictable. It's not about the destination, it's the rideIt's not Wedding Crashers. Wedding Crashers had endearing characters and Christopher Walken.
I tripped onto this movie at 0100Am on a Sunday morning expecting to turn the TV off and go to bed. They story line and the characters were to good to turn and walk away. I found myself laughing so hard at the character's lines, especially Tucker's. And I never watch movies to get a laugh. EVER!! I guess I liked it so much because it reminded me of my younger years and the guys I hung out with. There is always one in the group that everybody loves and hates all at the same time. The instigator. The one who always talks you into what you know is a really bad idea, but you do it anyway. I actually have a good friend named Tucker who falls into that category. This was just a FUN movie!!! This movie made me want to go back to my twenties and thirties and do it all over again. Ah, the good ole days!!!! LOL!!! I will watch it again. Two thumbs up.
I found this movie a refreshing look at the realism within our minds and self talk. Okay Im speaking personally. Fleeting thoughts that cross our minds that get pushed into the corners and recesses of whats right and wrong.Ultimate selfishness and using friends in the wrong way. Its playing out the what ifs. The actors and the director brought this all home to an entertaining refreshing Let the what if scenraios play out and stretch you paradigm. There's people out there like this. Its a different perspective exaggerated. Take away what you may and if your offended by what your not supposed to say or think turn it off.
