Too much of everything
Such a frustrating disappointment
Excellent, Without a doubt!!
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
Melody is a great film for kids who are finishing childhood, put its perfect for adults who were kids. This movie doesn't have a plot, but the characters is what makes the movie strong. Mark lester and jack Wild play two middle school boys who are best friends in a Christian School. The way they set up the school is pretty typical yet realistic. you see girls talking about kissing boys, boys smoking, wrestling, it reminds me the times i went to middle school. Daniel played by mark is a scoially awkward boy who's best friend is a complete opposite of him, orshaw, played by Jack. they were the best of friends until daniel went head over heels over girl, Melody, played by tracey hyde. this movie expresses puppy love, kids vs adults, all that stuff. Melody is a great film to anyone who has "grown up".
It was originally known as 'S.W.A.L.K.', which means 'Sealed With A Loving Kiss', but for the foreign markets changed to as it's now. A pleasant surprise. Really. That I did not expect. Sometimes some movies are not meant to go and get as much it can, I mean I'm talking about the revenue. Yes, this movie had kind of disappointing domestic box office, though did fairly well outside. I am glad for seeing this wonderful film.I have seen 'A Little Romance', 'My Girl' and many more (find them in 'Similar movies' on below), I really love them, but this one was, just wow, made me speechless. When I want to remember or to suggest if somebody asks about children romance themes to watch with their children, nephew and niece, this one would definitely pop-out first for sure. Worth spending time together for this. The cast was so good. Everyone was excellent, from teachers, principle to parents and co-stars. Especially top three character performance leaves a mark to remember. No doubt why people created cult classic concept, so this movie will live on forever in fans unlike box office giants that comes with so big and fades away so fast. I already saw it a couple of times, mainly because of the clean blend between performance, music and innocent story theme.''When is the wedding, Danny lover boy?''The music was another plus point. All the soundtracks were very catchy and melodic like the title. The Bee Gees have done an exceptional job. Now I got another half a dozen of music tracks for my 'film songs' collection. I sometime hum 'Daaa dee da dee da da dah' and 'Melody fair' without my knowledge. Who doesn't love the 70s music, come on.Many had liked the film because it brings their childhood memories. And so it did to me. Makes how much we miss those days what we did when we were lack of awareness about the real world. Such concept was this movie where two preteen kids fall in love, but in a result the story takes an unorthodox, quirky twist. Initially it starts off with a friendship theory and slowly marks its destination to advance in that direction.Apart from the leading two, Melody and Daniel, the third character called Ornshaw was equally good who is a troublesome which makes one of our favorite. His masterplans and chewing gum are the highlight of that role and the movie. In one of the scenes where parents try to convince their children about the love and life was very touching. The way it ends is what I love the most and I don't want to know what is going to happen next. Like a fairy tale 'happily ever after' or maybe opposite, but we know there's a lot we are not going to know what they do the rest of their life till death comes. hehehe. I have not said the 'a must watch' for a long time, so here it goes that you must try this one.
I watched this movie when it came out in 1971 I believe.I was just 20 yrs old then.I enjoyed the movie very much and i got lost in it quite a bit. I even saw it twice that's how this movie had an effect on me.You see I spent some time in England during the late sixties till mid 80,s and beyond. You can see the effect the British have on me. I even bought the soundtrack to the movie and I still today have the album. It,s out of print as well as this movie. It is very hard to find. But i managed to find the movie on VHS in the library. I can,t find the movie at all it even was in the local video store about 10 years ago. I eventually had ordered it through Amazon. ca. I got it on disc. It plays well and no skips and the quality is quite good. I also do like the actors and Tracy Hyde being a very beautiful girl swept me away. Especially when she tried to put on lipstick and eye make up she was transferred to an older more mature British girl. She caught my eye and I was only 20 back then. You see how this film has effected me. I liked Jack wild in it as well as Mark Lester. The location was familiar to me and the music by The Bee gees was good to. I liked the song first of May when Mark and Tracy held hands and walked to the cemetery to be together. what an effect. Sadly we lost jack Wild in 2002 I think. he was a character and I liked his cocky accent. The movie hasn't been seen here at all I think I saw it run in Chicago on WGN some time ago. I wonder why TCM can,t pick up this movie. They seem to pick up To Sir With Love. Anyways I watched the movie just last night before I wrote my review down here. If this movie does come on do watch it alone to get the real effect of the time and the places in and around London. It will always stick in my mind as I am now 63 years old...
I remember first seeing this film when I was a child not much older than the children portrayed in the film. I found it to be very enjoyable and refreshing especially considering that the story centered around kids and that the adults in the film were only secondary characters. The film was a low budget sparsely released project that wasn't an initial success, particularly here in the states which is a shame cause despite it's low budget and low distribution this lil' movie about a pre-teen romance was a gem of a film. My initial reason for seeing it was Jack Wild whom I recognized from the Sid & Marty Croft series; "H.R.Puff'n'stuff".I started watching the movie about these silly little kids in England and then I spotted the first shot of a young girl in the film, I didn't know her name at the time but she played Melody in the film a one Tracy Hyde making her film debut...this boy's heart literally melted for the first time in his young life-it was my first exposure and understanding of what true beauty is....timeless.I am in my mid 40's now, much like the stars of Melody and Tracy Hyde and am now an artist/illustrator this film was a key inspiration to me and to this day the lovely image of Tracy Hyde's Melody has lived on still inspiring after all these years.I look back at the film, which I have a copy of, and remember fondly and some not so fondly images of my younger days, what is was like to be a kid in the 70's, the friendships, trials and tribulations of school life and of that first love discovered-and in the end re-discovered.Melody wasn't a blockbuster, didn't win any awards that I know of and most of the world is ignorant of it's existence ,but it has something that most films sorely lack...it's special-it touched a cord in me and many others of my generation that still lives on achieving it's own special brand of immortality by instilling inspiration and memories of our lost youth.
