In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.
The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.
07/12/2018 I've watched alot of cowboy movies in my 69 years of life. The 1950's Gene Autry's, Lone Ranger movies in black & white, right up to the John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Steve McQueen and into Roddie Yates aka Clint Eastwood movies. Clint being my all time favorite old western actor as he played the hired killer in "The UnForgiven" my #1 favorite movie of all time in my book with at least a dozen Plus views by me and possibly more? This movie "Death Rides A Horse" is easily one of Lee Van Cleef's best movies that he ever made. He's on par with ol' Clint in his old western acting skills. Nothing more needs to be said after that. Watch for yourself and then you can decide??? Of course, I think this novie's great. Bon Appetit
. . . where every woman was a rape-victim-waiting-to-happen; where bankers robbed their own banks (which sounds like a story ripped from today's headlines); and where the bad guys always waited one second too long to kill the good guys. Vengeance is a dish best served cold, but with plenty of salt. Two Americans bring relief to a gang-terrorized Mexican village, with Ennio Morricone contributing one of his 80 film scores from the mid-1960s. This is a low-budget film, so instead of the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN you have "the better-than-average two" (which is still double the number of stalwarts in HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER, or any number of other Clint Eastwood solo acts). Climaxing with a mini-version of the Siege of the Alamo, DEATH RIDES A HORSE is not dissimilar from a samurai flick. Director Giulio Petroni uses red filters from time to time to denote flashbacks to "Bill's" childhood trauma, just as Alfred Hitchcock had done a few years earlier in MARNIE. (If ALIENS watch these two films, they might not "get" them, even if they're NOT color blind, as their blood is green!)
Perhaps by calling it a spaghetti western you now already know the storyline and the ending. It starts with a family being killed for some reason and yet the young boy is left alive by the gang who ensured they killed everyone else in the room. So - little thought went in to the scenario for setting up the revenge storyline. The boy grows up and ... well you can guess.Lee Van Cleef becomes the mentor, guardian, partner, competitor and plays his usual role to the usual high standard. The story plays out - but that's about it.There is nothing in the dialog to add value. There is nothing from the support actors. There aren't even any tense moments or long held stares as there should be in a spag-western.A fun genre, for which this is a lesser number.
A gang of western cutthroats kills a ranch family during a robbery, but misses the hidden boy witness. Fifteen years pass by quickly. All grown up, tall blond John Phillip Law (as Bill) uses visual clues to track his family's murderers. He receives an unlikely ally when likewise vengeful gunslinger Lee Van Cleef (as Ryan) gets out of jail; the older man was part of the gang, but played a different role than the others. They have a secret bond. Although dubbed, the stars make it predominantly English-speaking Italian film. This is a stylistically stiff, sneering and steely-eyed attempt to capitalize on the newly popular "spaghetti western" genre. Unconventional direction, camera-work and editing adds a little interest.*** Death Rides a Horse (8/31/67) Giulio Petroni ~ John Phillip Law, Lee Van Cleef, Mario Brega, Anthony Dawson
