One of my all time favorites.
It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...
Watching it is like watching the spectacle of a class clown at their best: you laugh at their jokes, instigate their defiance, and "ooooh" when they get in trouble.
A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
Lee Byeong-gu is convinced that aliens from the Andromeda galaxy are living amongst us and are planning something dastardly to coincide with an upcoming eclipse. He is believes that Kang Man-shik, the head of a multinational conglomerate, is the aliens' representative on Earth so, with the help of his childlike girlfriend, he kidnaps the man and takes him to his remote home. Here he proceeds to torture the man to try to force him to put him in contact with the Andromedan leader. While this is going on the police are searching for Kang Man-shik and make a link to other disappearances. This film is definitely bizarre; it is clearly a comedy with its strange set up and frequent ridiculous moments but it also has the power to shock. While the torture isn't too graphic most of the time there are disturbing moments... often as we see what Lee Byeong-gu plans to do next. The design of the room where Man-shik is held adds to the disturbing feel; especially after we see remains of previous victims. Ha-kyun Shin does a fine job as Byeong-gu; making the character sympathetic even though he is clearly dangerously insane. Yun-shik Baek also impresses as the naturally terrified and perplexed Man-shik. The tension rises nicely as the film approaches its surreal conclusion. This film certainly won't be for everybody but I'd certainly recommend it for those looking for something rather different.
Is it a Crime Drama? - Well, Yes... and No. Is it Torture Porn? - Well, Yes... and No. Is it Science Fiction? - Well, Yes... and No. Is it a Comedy? - Well, Yes... and No. Throw in a bit of blunt social commentary, a contrived love story and some bits lifted from famous movies (2001 and Close Encounters), and you have a recipe for a mish-mash which isn't going to hang together and satisfies no-one..... But somehow it does all (mostly) work, delivering an engaging movie that's more than the sum of it's parts. None of the disparate main elements particularly dominate the film at the expense of the others, which makes this impossible to pigeon-hole into one dominant genre..... Great entertainment, provided you aren't put off by the "Torture Porn" element.....
Save The Green Planet was one of those films that kept 'looking' at me from the shelves whilst DVD shopping. Usually, I only collect Asian horror movies, but (as with the equally bizarre Happiness of the Katikuris) I couldn't resist taking a look at this one. I'm so glad I did.I know that you should never judge a book by its cover, but looking at the Green Planet's sleeve notes, you'd be forgiven for assuming this was a lighthearted, screwball comedy with the trademark 'bonkers' story line and characterisations. How wrong you would be. Whilst many of the elements in Green Planet are about as bonkers as bonkers gets, the film is intrinsically a touching, sad and fulfilling piece of cinema. There are some truly horrifying moments too, and it's only when we realise the truth behind the protagonist's irrational and violent behaviour that we can feel heartfelt sympathy for his empty, one man crusade against 'alien' invaders. The tension in the scenes where the protagonist's hostage tries; (and almost succeeds) to escape from his underground dungeon is about as effective as anything you will witness in a movie. At once funny, tense, horrifying, and inevitably tragic, Save The Green Planet is a strange, sad but uplifting film well worth a place in your DVD collection.
From the trailers and box-art - I was expecting SAVE THE GREEN PLANET! to be some whacked-out J-comedy/sci-fi film that would not be something that I'd be too interested in. I was wrong. While definitely containing comedy and sci-fi elements - there is a lot of other stuff going on in this one as well...Lee Byeong-gu is a strange kid who thinks an important businessman is the head of an alien race who is setting up to overthrow the Earth. Through various degrees of torture, Lee is determined to find out the true nature of the businessman, and thwart his plans...BUT...is Lee correct about the man's true identity - or is he just a complete whack-job who has ulterior motives for targeting his victim???Definitely not the "light-hearted" comedy that the film appears to be from the trailer I saw - SAVE THE GREEN PLANET! is a VERY entertaining and well-made film, especially as a debut feature from director Joon-Hwan Jang. There are definitely a lot of humorous moments in the film - but they are mostly dark and somewhat twisted. This is one of the few films that successfully balances many genres and pulls it off all successfully. I personally found the ending to be a bit predictable - but the "ride" there is definitely worth it...9/10
