There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
This classic film noir follows Harry Fabian, an ambitious, low-life hustler, as he schemes and betrays people who are themselves betraying other people.Richard Widmark is terrific as Harry from the first scene, where he goes from shiftiness to fury to breezy charm in a few seconds. Harry is a terrific character who oozes desperation and self-delusion. He's smart enough to get himself in trouble but never catches on to the con he's running on himself. The rest of the cast is terrific as well, particularly Stanislaus Zbyszko and Mike Mazurki as angry wrestlers whose fight is one of the movie's highlights. The cinematography is gorgeous, particularly as things fall apart and Harry finds himself in the titular city night. The movie moves briskly through its dark, complex plot, in which bad people keep making bad decisions as though actively chasing unhappiness and disaster. I wasn't sure whether I would give this movie an 8 or 9 rating until that final five minutes, which is incredible. This is a must-see if you like film noir.
NIGHT AND THE CITY is a little strange and morbid film about the life of the small but ambitious impostors who are in all ways trying to get rich. The picturesque film that at times turns into a sort of grotesque situation. Characterization is probably bad for a reason. Identification with the characters is almost impossible.Through the story can feel a certain pathos. The dark and gloomy atmosphere is constant. All the characters seem so unsatisfied and unhappy. Failed ambition of the main character leads to death, the collapse of the plan and ultimately bloodshed. Richard Widmark as Harry Fabian is pretty good. Character contorted face and body irregularities is full of obsessions. I do not think that Harry was evil figure. He simply dissatisfied and unhappy. In the end we are left without any explanation. He was just nasty creature that killed his own ambitions. Francis L. Sullivan as Phil Nosseross is extremely smart and capable nightclub owner who carries something sinister. Yes, there is one weakness.Other characters, except the great champion in wrestling, I was not impressed. Gene Tierney as Mary Bristol offered an absolute void. Sketchy and uninteresting. She is really beautiful, but it is not enough. Even the lost and certain sweetness in her image. I was always happy to think of Laura. In this case it is too late. Each effect of the film is dark and malevolent to grotesque proportions. Extremely brave attempt that ends with dark and somewhat eccentric end.
They got it right. Who? The team that put this movie together and then acted it out to perfection. Its all here too. All the hopes, dreams, opportunities that humans come into contact with but not everyone handles them the same. Here, we see a guy who is driven, but not for the right reasons. Furthermore, on the way to trying to make a buck, he ignores what really counts and that is the tragedy that is delivered nicely and potently by Richard Widmark supported by Gene Tierney. Lot of nice miscellaneous players giving us memorable scenes which makes for good entertainment and moving the story along. They just don't make them like this but they should. I will say that this was remade with Robert Deniro in the lead part and it was good as well. Get a glimpse of one of the businesses that have girls as hostesses who hawk expensive drinks, gifts etc. just because they can and how people steer them customers too. This tactic still thrives everywhere on the globe too. Snack and a tasty drink with this one and enjoy this classic film
I was looking for something to watch and grabbed this one from my shelves (I had recorded it years ago). I had only vague recollections of it from my previous viewing, but was spellbound this time, and am mystified why my first viewing had left me so noncommittal. This is truly a superb movie and a classic example of noir at its finest. The story line is taught and gripping. The cinematography, especially the lighting design, is the best of what noir has to offer. The script is excellent, with no wasted words and no excesses. Richard Widmark's performance is a reminder of what a truly great actor he was. Francis Sullivan's Nosseros is superb, and Gene Tierney and Hugh Marlowe put in good turns. Not seen too often, and if you get chance to see it, go for it.
