American Hero

R 5
2015 1 hr 26 min Action , Comedy , Science Fiction

Melvin, a reluctant hero who is far from super, has been suppressing his telekinetic powers for years with booze, drugs, and women. In the process, he has failed at practically everything, most of all as a parent to his son. After a brush with death, Melvin decides to use his powers for good and clean up the streets of New Orleans with the help of his best friend/definitely-not-a-sidekick, Lucille. For a man who can do the impossible, it might be a fight even he can’t win.

It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.

Melvin (Stephen Dorff) has "no manners and no grace" as his ex-wife (Keena Ferguson) bars him from seeing their son Rex (Jonathan Billions) who must travel through drug infested areas to go to school. Melvin likes to party with recreational drugs and with the young ladies. He is educated and and considers himself, "talented and astute, but lazy." His best friend Lucille (Eddie Griffin) is in a wheel chair. They live in an impoverish section of New Orleans. Lucille harps on Melvin for being an underachiever as you see Melvin has major telekinetic powers and chooses to use it for street magic, rob robbers, and impress women. As expected, Melvin has an epiphany and decides he wants to do good so maybe he could see his son.The theme of the film is about a wasted gift. The acting wasn't that great and the epiphany came late. The ending was anti-climatic. The film exhibited some good writing, it just didn't present itself in an entertaining fashion.Guide: F-bomb, brief nudity

If you're looking for something in the lines of the Avengers universe you'll most likely be disappointed.Even though Stephen Dorff's character technically has some superpowers of sorts (levitation through mind-control) he doesn't really use it all that much most of the time.He prefers getting drunk and high over chasing bad guys and that's the main focus of the movie, even though sure there is a little action in it but not close enough to warrant this movie having action as the main genre listed (or listed at all).No it's more a mockumentary drama-comedy about a 'loser' douche-bag who just happen to have some supernatural powers (don't expect a new 'Chronicle' either though when I tell you that, again the lead is more impressed with the power of weed and alcohol than his levitation powers) They definitely had the potential to do more with the script but it was watchable at least.Eddie Griffin plays his best friend and he's in it for most of the scenes so if you like him it will be an extra treat.

This is the latest super pleasure shooter after "American Ultra", "Limitless" and all the rest including the old school "Scarface". Drugs these days are blended with a telekinesis and taking into account low budget have been performed fairly well, I would even say alluring..Quite colourful graphic savvy movie with an inventive plot. Nick Love wrote and derected ..oh yeah..what the impressive vision he has...The idea combined with a superiority and drugs sure will cheaply be taken over by susceptible youth (unfortunately for a short time until the body is safe and sound of course). I strongly believe that one day mankind will be rewarded by such a power but sure there won't be drugs... or is it possible that crowd of thoughtless addicts being able to command natural forces can agree with each other?

American Hero show us. A different kind of hero, one who doesn't insults our intelligence. The movie show us the life of Melvin but the history of his community, where working class people fight everyday to live in a hard and hostile society. I appreciate a lot the character of Lucille, different than the usual characterization of a person with disability (I prefer to talk about functional diversity), the drugs threat over youth, The Katrina that still affect the life of many people. Is many histories and the history of someone who have been lost for many years and finally open the eyes and use their capabilities for the community.I have read many reviews about the movie giving it a bad qualification. If you expected to find Hancock sorry, theirs no fireworks but if content. Probably, we all assume that in popular culture a super hero movie must be accompanied by special effects, non-stop action than reduce to nothing the content, it doesn't matter. This will must make us think how the mainstream cinema have influenced us.I think is a good movie with a non millionaire budget but with an interesting and fresh use of characters and their relation with spectators.
