The acting in this movie is really good.
An iconic teen romance film from the 80s. Maybe it's just because of the positive memories I have associated with this film, but I think it is very entertaining. It's the better version of "Pretty in Pink."
Does this movie live up to its name? If you ask me, the answer is yes. Written and produced by the late John Hughes, Some Kind of Wonderful is exactly what it is: Some kind of wonderful. Eric Stoltz plays Keith Nelson, a high school student and mechanic who asks a popular student named Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson) out on a date. But this is not without risks, as Amanda's narcissistic ex-boyfriend plans to create trouble for Keith. Unbeknownst to Keith, his tomboy friend Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson), the subject of lesbian rumors in high school, has feelings for him. Many romantic movies of this ilk tend to provide the question of if the boy will get the girl. But the real question in this film is: Should the boy get the girl? That's what makes Some Kind of Wonderful so interesting to watch.
2017 and I'm just now watching this movie. I think everyone who has ever dealt with a bully can certainly relate. This movie shows us how to stand up to the bullies. I loved it! I'm a Mary Stuart Masterson fan, ever since she played in 'Chances Are', one of my faves. She played really great 'innocence' in both these movies, and that's the sort of charm I like about these two movies with her in them. Eric Stoltz has played in a lot of movies, but I cannot remember him in anything else that I have seen (and there are many of his movies I haven't seen yet). So far, this is the one that will stick with me. To me, this movie was about how to stick up for yourself when it comes to bullies. It's worthy of your viewing! Enjoy!
This film was a sleeper from the 80s that didn't get enough recognition. What makes this film so great is the combination of non-glossy actors, perfectly timed non-mainstream rock/pop music, and a grittiness that wasn't often seen in 80s romance teen films. Eric Stoltz portrays an A-typical male lead role, Keith, who was more cerebral than heartthrob. Mary Stuart Masterson stole the entire film with her brilliant portrayal of the tough, Tomboy best friend, Watts, who is actually very vulnerable and loving. Elias Koteas is particularly great as the juvenile delinquent who makes the end of the movie absolutely epic! I have to say that the music is just brilliantly done in this film, enhancing and complementing every single scene and eliciting the appropriate mood. Lastly, this film boasts what I believe to be the VERY BEST ON-SCREEN KISS EVER! Never before have I seen a more complex kiss; it manages to be awkward, romantic, and arousing all at the same time.
