When the woman goes into labor, three loyal Soviets deliver her to a field hospital: a newly graduated officer, an affable truck driver, and a soldier shell-shocked into muteness. The dangerous trip to the hospital ends up a rite of passage for all concerned. The winner of a special gold medal at the Venice Film Festival, Peace to Him Who Enters was originally released in the USSR in 1961 under the title Mir Vkhodyashchemu.

The Dresser

Bombs are falling, sirens are wailing, the curtain is up in an hour but the actor/manager Sir who is playing Lear is nowhere to be seen. His dresser Norman must scramble to keep the production alive but will Sir turn up in time and if he does will he be able to perform that night? The Dresser is a wickedly funny and deeply moving story of friendship and loyalty as Sir reflects on his lifelong accomplishments and seeks to reconcile his turbulent friendships with those in his employ before the final curtain.

In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

In one respect, I can understand the disappointment others feel, that Midway didn't have the production quality that many expected of the movie itself...but then I thought about all the complex elements that had to be incorporated to tell the story...sure, they could have left out the Charleton Heston and son portion, but all the background story leading to the Midway battle certainly could not be left out...so we ended up with a less than perfect war movie...Not mediocre, by any measure, just not as epic as the battle was. If you are a student of WW2, you already know that the US was really hurting in the early stages of the war. The Coral Sea campaign was nearly a disaster, but we held on...without the superb efforts that the code breakers put out, and the part that PBY reconaisance aircraft played, the Battle of Midway might never have even happened...None the less, a hugely complex Naval meeting of minds is told rather well, within the alotted time available for a movie...So, let's remember what the movie represents, the first major win for the United States, a win that echoed throughout the rest of the war...

An enjoyable and informative movie about the Battle of Midway which attempts to keep to the facts. The main problem with the movie are the continuity errors. I can accept the use of different types of aircraft for the battle scenes even if the types are not strictly accurate in some cases. What is more jarring is when the aircraft taking off is different from the one landing when it is supposed to be the same aircraft. This confuses all viewers of the movie and is simply sloppy film making. There is a smattering of unnecessary footage thrown in that dilutes some of the movie's impact. Overall the movie is quite entertaining but not quite up to the standard of Tora Tora Tora.

How dumb is this? A war film which tries to copy another war film made 6 years earlier (Tora Tora Tora, 1970).Upchuck Heston is drawn as a god of sorts by director Jack "Hack" Smight. In one scene, Hal Holbrook is standing right in front of Heston, but looks up at Heston like he's looking at a painting on the ceiling. There must have been something about Bob Webber that Heston didn't like because Heston is cold to him whenever they're on screen together -- or maybe Heston just didn't like playing junior to Webber in rank. Newsflash, Upchuck: IT'S A MOVIE, YOU DILDO! Upchuck Heston.... pffft. If you get the chance to watch this navy bugle oil, pull up the gangplank and go full-steam-ahead out to sea.

Man, this one really stinks.Jack Smight's faded direction with his shameless use of stock footage from other war films makes this action exercise a total bore. Or perhaps it's Smight propping up of Charlton Heston as some kind of 'Moses' of War World II, or Toshiro Mifune's horrendously dubbed voice, or Pat Morita's comatose delivery of his lines, or the inclusion of the sappiest love story since Robert Francis woo'ed May Wynn in 'The Caine Mutiny' 22 years earlier. Whatever the culprit, this 'Middling-way' belongs in the can --- and I do mean the can in the men's room ..... flush twice.
