Best movie ever!
Admirable film.
it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.
At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
Completely successful film on every front. Soulful direction, Jenkins' mesmerising central performance, screenplay with depth, score with drumming perfect. With the situation in Syria still continuing these many years after the film was made and America's policy towards refugees tightening, the film's impact now is even more intensive.
Widowed Connecticut College professor Walter Vale (Richard Jenkins) is lonely and not into his work. His son is in London. He has to present a paper he co-authored but had little to do with in a NYC conference. He goes to stay at his New York apartment when he's surprised by Tarek (Haaz Sleiman) and Zainab (Danai Gurira). They are illegal immigrants who thought they had sublet the apartment. Walter decides to let them stay. He's from Syria and she's from Senegal. Walter and Tarek become friends over his drumming. Zainab makes handmade jewelry. Tarek gets arrested by plainclothes cops in the subway and ends up in a detention center. Walter gets him a lawyer and Tarek's mother Mouna (Hiam Abbass) leaves Michigan to be close to her son.Jenkins is quiet but has great humanity. It presents the invisible world of the illegals in the aftermath of 9/11. These are all characters of believable human beings. That's what makes Walter and Tarek's friendship great. It's hesitant at first but accepting and real. The plot is not overly dramatic and doesn't have big twists. The story flows rather than jumps. What it does have is a great sense of human relationships.
This is the movie which can feel power to have of the music. Two people of Walter and Tarek totally different in both the race and the viewpoint become a friend through music. And Walter who a wife dies, and shut a heart grows up interiorly. His growth is the highlight of this movie. Him who heard only classical music, he comes to be interested in a musical instrument called jembe and African music by Tarek and cohabitation with Zainab. Music has the tendency by a district and a country, but the music is originally free. The music disturbs an obstacle of a race and the age and can be absorbed. It appears in the scene that Tarek teaches Walter how to play the jembe and plays for the first time. His figure to play while being embarrassed is totally like the boy. However, this work is not the movie which merely conveys power of the music. It is a claim that music is limited in the modern society. It is the movie which a pain is left in a heart after having finished looking.
Walter is a professor at university, but lacks the will to do his job and play piano. One day, he goes his apartment and comes across a black couple who lives in his apartment without permission. Walter and a black man, whose name is Tarek get familiar with each other through a musical instrument which Tarek brings, djembe. This film describes the friendship between two men which was built by a musical instrument and the hard and severe life. I like the music played in this film, especially the music played by djembe because they make me feel good. Also I like not the only the scenes Tarek is playing djembe but also Walter is playing because they plays music very happily as they forget the real life. I recommend everyone to watch this film because I think you may be moved by their friendship and you may be relaxed by their music.
