Heavyweights
Camp Hope is a summer retreat for overweight boys run by a kindly couple who make the campers feel comfortable with their extra pounds. But when tyrannical fitness guru Tony buys the camp, he puts the kids on a cruel regimen that goes too far. Sick of the endless weeks of "all work and no play," the kids stage a coup and reclaim their summer of fun.

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
Gerry Garner along with other chubby kids are sent to Camp Hope, a fat camp. The camp was owned by the kindly Bushkins but they went bankrupt. The camp is taken over by motivational wildman Tony Perkis (Ben Stiller) intend on making them skinnier to promote himself. Lars is his militaristic henchman. Tim (Paul Feig) and Pat Finley (Tom McGowan) are the gentle counselor holdovers from before. Julie (Leah Lail) is the pretty nurse. The kids has to battle Tony as they prepare for the Apache Relay against Camp MVP's jocks.Written by Judd Apatow and Steven Brill, this is a showcase for Ben Stiller to do a crazy character. He's working out stuff to be used in later characters and has some funny moments. The adult actors are OK but the kids are mostly duds. The supposed lead kid is weak. I think that's the main problem. I like the kids but they're not funny. Shaun Weiss and Kenan Thompson are the best of the kids. The jokes are just not there. There is an interesting idea of making fun of fat camp. The directions from Brill is limited.
"Heavyweights" is a mid-90's Disney film about a fat camp taken over by the villainous fatboy-turned-success Tony Perkis. While the premise is not so novel, the execution is great and keeps you pretty entertained throughout. Some of the humor is dated, very 90's-specific. However, there is plenty of timeless, cross-generational humor, and Ben Stiller is absolutely at the top of his game. He would reprise this role many times again in his career: the guy with low self-esteem who becomes an overcompensating jerk. Tom McGowan, who plays a Camp Hope lifer, also plays a solid role and draws many laughs.Sure, it's another Disney story about underdog kids who end up conquering the odds... or something like that. But Stiller and McGowan are great, and the kids do a pretty admirable too. It's not a must-see movie, but you also won't feel like you wasted your time for having watched it.
Heavyweights is a 1995 comedy released by Walt Disney Pictures and directed by Steven Brill, the creator of the also hilarious Mighty Ducks movie (which is another favorite of mine). It is about overweight kids who are sent to a camp run by a fitness fanatic named Tony Pekis (Ben Stiller from "Meet the Parents") who is out to make their summer a nightmare. I first saw this movie when it came on Disney Channel about 3 or 4 years ago and since then I have bought and watched this movie over 12 times and I plan to see it many, many more times because this movie is absolutely hilarious and I think it is a Classic movie. From the very beginning to the end credits where the Camp Hope song is sung (which will have you laughing even more) and where Perkis becomes a door-to-door salesman (which is also hilarious) Heavyweights is (if you have a sense of humor) a great movie which I love to quote. One of my many favorite quotes is when Josh, (Goldberg from The Mighty Ducks films) says to Perkis "I know whose candy it is, okay. The candy belongs to seymour butts." Then Perkis replies, confused "Seymour butts?" "Seymour butts?" "Who's seymour butts, huh who's seymour butts?" then Josh says "Nobodys seen more butts than you Uncle Tony!" If you haven't seen this movie yet, the next time you are in a video store, consider renting this one. You shouldn't and I hope you won't be disappointed. You will laugh harder than you probably ever have at a PG film. Rating: Over the scale! (if you've seen the movie you get my joke).
The movie Heavy Weights was probably one of the cutest movies I've seen as a child. I did indeed go to summer camp, but I unfortunately was one of the only 'fat' kids there. This movie made me dream of going to a camp where EVERYONE was the fat kid. This is just a cute movie that does a great job of showing team work, self esteem, and believing in yourself. It also shows how often 'fat' kids are their own worse enemies...which I've lived first hand. And Toni Perkis JR is portrayed by one of my favorite actors Ben Stiller....is the perfect example of people who try to undersand what it's like for 'fat' kids, but have NO idea.
