There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.

It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.

This movie is easily explained as someone who had a fever dream. It's surreal and plays with your senses and emotions. The uncanny feeling when your're not having a nightmare but a bad dream. There's no clear way of telling if you should laugh or cry in this movie unlike your average box office hits. But if you have the patience and time, this movie will give you strange dreamy never to be forgotten.

This movie... if you can call it that, is from some no name director trying to be edgy. It's disgusting and makes no sense at the same time. This director maybe the next Jeffrey Dahmer or John Wayne Gacy btw

Unfortunately you first have to make sense of the movie in some way to understand what you are seeing, and in this film thats near impossible. When making a film the idea is (i thought) to make a firstly a compelling story/plot. Tho this movie did (sorta) achieve that it failed to bring it to the audience in such a way that it is either compelling of even comprehensible. At first i wondered whether the look of the movie was because of budget, then i found out it was intentional and took hours upon hours to make a single minute of film. So the idea was to make it look as gritty and abstract as possible. That the film makers gloriously achieved. But besides that, what exactly was the point? Hardly any entertainment , perhaps only shock value even tho that got old rather quick. At the end of the movie I was left confused , asking myself whether it was an visually abstract original , unique film or a piece of art overdrawn with one or two moments of shock value repeated over and over. This is probably the most subjective movie i have ever seen, tho i haven't seen many films like this, closest that compare would be ERASERHEAD and TETSUO. Those both had at least story lines you could (sort of) follow , this movie ,if you don't watch out, could just easily be a bunch of awkward, bizarre , incoherent mumbo jumbo. For a selective audience.Enjoy_ Evil_Fred

Begotten left me wondering whether it has been a movie or a video installation. Either way, it's been truly disturbing. The main question is why are such movies/installations treated like art. There has been some rudimentary plot that could have been interpreted anyway you'd like. Sound and music followed what happened on the screen, yet it all sounded like random, albeit harrowing, noise. As if someone tried very hard to trigger a suicidal reaction in viewers. At the time of it's creation Begotten must have been a challenge to make. Today with digital photography and powerful computers generating abstract images, it would have probably been easier to make.
