Sadly Over-hyped
It is a performances centric movie
This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
True to its essence, the characters remain on the same line and manage to entertain the viewer, each highlighting their own distinctive qualities or touches.
Kevin Brewer (Drake Bell) is going with bookish friend Morris Hooper for his scholarship meeting. His girlfriend Gina (Alona Tal) is going to Miami without him. She breaks up with him for being a dork. Fletcher tells the guys about a wild college weekend trip. Kevin decides to go partying with Morris and idiot best friend Carter Scott (Andrew Caldwell) at the University. He falls for college girl Kendall (Haley Bennett) and faces frat bully Teague (Nick Zano).A large part of my dislike hinges on Andrew Caldwell. He is the standard fat loudmouth best friend. The problem is that he overplays the annoying card. He's far too unlikeable. His early interaction with his friends is off-putting. I need to laugh at him. Instead, I'm annoyed with him. Drake Bell is a dud. He's obviously trying grow out of his Nickelodeon TV show which I never saw. I don't blame him for trying but his acting is stiff. I like the endearing dorky third wheel Morris. On the other hand, Kenall is also a dud. Haley Bennett has always struck me as a high maintenance girl. She fits Gina much better and Alona Tal would have been a superior Kendall as a girl next door. This is not a particular special college party romp and the leads lack good charisma.
This movie ranks up with some of the funniest college movies in recent times such as Van Wilder & PCU. It's about three high school seniors who visit a college campus for the weekend and become the victims of hazing & perverse jokes by some fraternity brothers. The three main characters are likable yet very different. The three have all kinds of wild adventures & get the ultimate revenge on the fraternity guys. I wouldn't compare it to Animal House, because the movie is more about the 3 boys and their escapades & less about the frat house. There's plenty of laughs and crude humor. The unrated version also has plenty of skin. Parties, sex, drugs, wild fun - this is the way college should be!
I read a lot of the comments on here before viewing. OK first off, it is certainly not worth paying money to see in theaters (but that is besides the point considering that it's not in theaters anymore). The acting wasn't bad, nor was the actual content in the movie, but it just felt like the poor man's Superbad...same premise, just done worse.Casting Drake Bell as the lead is a bad idea. I've watched a few eps of his TV show "Drake and Josh". I think it is a pretty decent TV show, just it has him in a dual-lead situation with Josh Peck, and Josh is the real reason the show is as good as some perceive it to be. Casting Drake without Josh is akin to casting David Spade without Chris Farley, to put it better. The other two main characters, the fat one and the nerdy one weren't terrible, but they weren't great either. What you usually find with these trio-lead movies like Superbad, or quad-lead like Road Trip, is good harmony between the characters that makes for some funny situations. There really wasn't much of that in College, especially with the fat one knocking on the nerdy one all the time. Remove that from a movie like this and you are spelling disaster. What made Superbad good was its slapstick comedy and some very good banter back and forth from the all the characters. There wasn't much of that in College, but the movie was comical to watch. OBVIOUSLY what occurs in this movie is not what goes on in college for the most part, but its fun to dream, i suppose.Contrary to what all the 1/10 comments would have you believe, you should be capable of sitting through this movie start to finish. There's a lot of TNA in the movie (look it up if you don't know what it means), so some good eye candy. The only thing that this movie was lacking was some good dry, sarcastic humor that you would find in Superbad and the sort.
I believe this movie to have funny moments and I definitely laughed many times, but I could also see why people wouldn't like it. The same old generic college frat party movie with the same punchlines over and over downplay what I really enjoyed about this movie. I wasn't really a fan of Drake Bell until this movie, not because he acted particularly well, but because he finally seemed to be himself in the role. In the bloopers you can see him acting like how he would normally act outside of the Nickolodeon life. Maybe it's an opportunity for him to broaden his future roles. Overall the movie was enjoyable to watch when I couldn't sleep late at night, so if college frat movies are your thing and you don't have anything to do it might just be a better movie than it was for many of the people taking the time to write the reviews.
