Down Periscope
Maverick Navy Lieutenant Commander Tom Dodge will never be a textbook officer, but he's a brilliant seaman who's always wanted to command a nuclear submarine — he's been given one last chance to clean up his record. Unfortunately, Admiral Graham, his nemesis, would rather sink the fleet than give Dodge his own boat. So, Graham stacks the deck against him and assigns Dodge to the Stingray, a diesel-powered WW2 submarine that can barely keep afloat. To make matters worse, Dodge's crew is a collection of maladjusted, mistake-prone misfits. Then, he's tagged the "enemy" in a crucial war game, and ordered to take on the U.S. Navy's best.

Best movie of this year hands down!
Admirable film.
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
The main problem with this movie is that it has all been done before. Lauren Holly looks great on here as the first woman dive officer. Trouble is Cary Grant and Tony Curtis did women on a Sub better in Operation Petticoat. Subs doing war games has been done before. Actually, the real action movies do it better too. When it was released what did this movie really have going for it? It was Grammars first feature film trying to take advantage of his success on NBC with Fraiser Crane.Trouble is Dr. Crane might have been better off as the ships doctor here. His role as the subs captain makes him come off as quite wooden. Love Lauren here, but Bruce Dern comes off pretty flat here as he does not get a lot of script. This is a movie that would have done well in the 1950's but is outdated here which is why it suffered at the box office. As a cross between Run Silent Run Deep, and Operation Petticoat, it hits a point way below both of these films. Down, indeed
It's the last chance for rebellious Tom Dodge (Kelsey Grammar) to command a submarine. He's given the rusty obsolete diesel-powered USS Stingray and a crew of misfits by Admiral Graham (Bruce Dern). Marty Pascal (Rob Schneider) is the XO with a crew including Emily Lake (Lauren Holly), Howard (Harry Dean Stanton), and Sonar (Harland Williams). Intelligence shows the Russians activating their diesel fleet. Admiral Winslow (Rip Torn) gives Dodge an assignment to test the Navy's defense. Graham sends Captain Knox (William H. Macy) and the modern attack sub USS Orlando.Ten years earlier, this would have been led by Steve Guttenberg. Kelsey Grammar isn't quite the same. He doesn't have the rebellious carefree personality. I would rather have Guttenberg past his prime. That would fit the character anyways. He's suppose to be past his prime with a final shot at the captaincy. Other than that, this is a functional submarine comedy adventure. It would be a lot better with a leader who fits the role.
I love this comedy every time I see it. But I am confused about the timing of the infamous tattoo. Admiral Graham (Bruce) said that Dodge (Kelsey) got so drunk as an ensign that he had "Climb Aboard" tattooed you-know-where, and then he added that only three years ago Dodge brushed up against a Soviet sub. But Dodge told Lake that he got over the brushing incident by getting drunk and a tattoo, (which he didn't recommend), and he began explaining the tattoo at the end of the movie by saying that it happened after the Murmansk incident. But that would mean that he was many years past being a mere ensign (no disrespect). Still, an excellent movie, and Holly Lauren, later the Director at NCIS, looked great as a busty blonde, didn't she?
This Is A Film That Takes A Whack At All Submarine Movies, This Is Also The Only Submarine Movie I Will Watch With The Exception Of Das Boot(Don't Think That They Are Related Movies In Any Way, Shape Or Form). The Best Performance Is From Either Rob Schnider Or Kelsey Grammar, Both Were Absolutely Hysterical, Schnider Garuanteed Is A Good Performance In This Whether Your A Fan Of Him Or Not.The Tattoo On Kelsey Grammar's Penis In This Film Is By Far One Of The Best Ongoing Jokes In Cinematic History (In My Opinion) Its Funny At The End When Lauren Holly Asks "Whats This Tattoo Business I've Been Hearing About?" And He Replies "Well Its A LONG Story..." That Always Cracks Me Up.Overall I Highly Recommend This Film To A Fan Of Dumb Humour.
