Smiley Face
Jane, a struggling but perpetually stoned actress, has a busy day ahead. She has several important tasks on her list, including buying more marijuana. A Disappointing Continuation
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
This film is not remotely funny. The main character is really stoned, she acts like a complete moron (and I mean complete) and she ruins everything she touches. It certainly deglamorizes cannabis use, while at the same time relishing in it. The only problem with the film, and it is a major problem, an overwhelming one even, is that there is nothing about it that it is funny. There are no jokes, there is no wit, nothing amusing or surprising happens; she's just really really stoned and stupid. That's it. I guess you can consider that a spoiler.I only watched this cos Gregg Araki's early films are wonderful obscene punk queer anomalies. I had faith in him. He let me down. He let us all down.
It is human nature to laugh at pain, its a survival mechanism; so, there's a lot to laugh at in "Smiley Face." Anna Faris does an outstanding job of making a self-destructive character likable and sympathetic. That's Faris' gift to movie-goers, she is extremely likable. And that saves "Smiley Face." The movie starts off suggesting a female version of "Harold and Kumar..." but as it progresses the story becomes extremely dark.Jane F. (Faris' character) has a serious marijuana problem and doesn't know it. She isn't so much in denial as she is naive. She will learn. And as her day spins downward, it is often hilarious but increasingly painful to watch the good-natured but badly broken Jane F. (I suspect the AA reference is deliberate) crash and burn. The supporting cast is...supportive. The characters are underdeveloped, but this is Jane F.'s story so this is not a major failing, all though Jane Lynch is completely wasted in her role as a casting director.I would suggest watching this movie sober. Jane F's view of the world while under the influence might be disturbingly familiar and evocative for viewers who are high but mockingly funny if you know what she's going through while not going through it yourself. And it is a pretty accurate picture of what many smokers look like to those who aren't with them on the trip.
This movie is now in one of my top five stoner movies. For people who don't smoke, I don't think it's the right experience for you. I watched this movie quite baked, and it was hilarious. I seriously laughed out loud many times, only because of Anna Faris. She was probably the best element of the movie. Her acting was priceless, seriously, she looked so freaking baked for the entire movie it was so hilarious to see! Very good jokes and overall very funny movie! But for the plot, it's for sure not the most epic and complex tale of the history... It's actually very omnipresent but not really important. The actress is entertaining enough to make you watch the entire film. Potheads give it a shot while you smoke a bit, it's a great fun but I don't see non-smokers really enjoying the experience. I, of course, watched the movie high and another time sober, and I can confirm a good buzz helps get you into the movie, into the character. It's worth a solid 7 out of 10!
This is a great reason not to do drugs, or eat things that don't belong to you. I found this movie hilarious and teaches a great lesson - don't do drugs.Anna Faris was perfect for the role of Jane F. because Faris can play a clueless girl on a one day adventure perfectly. At first, I thought this was going to be a horrible movie, then it got really good. This cast is great. Danny Masterson and Jane Lynch were perfect. This is, in my opinion, one of the best movies with Anna Faris in it. In my opinion, its one of the best movies ever. I recommend buying or renting it, but don't show it to little kids. Drug use and language.
