good back-story, and good acting
Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
The film centers around Leonardo, a blind teenager, and if that wasn't hard enough on him, he's also struggling with his sexuality and his relationship with his parents. When the new boy Gabriel befriends him, it tests his relationship with best friend Giovana and opens him up to new opportunities.I absolutely love this movie! For once we get a coming of age movie that isn't about a straight, moody white boy with too many hormones, and get something that feels so much more real. The acting is great, and so are the characters and the relationships between them. Giovana and Leo have such a great friendship, although Giovana is in the friend zone. Leo doesn't think he should be limited because of his disability, causing him to be both rebellious and sassy which I love. Gabriel probably had the least impression on me, he was nice enough but kinda bland I thought. Although obviously I still shipped him and Leo, and the film keeps their fate in the balance until basically the last ten minutes which was nerve wracking to say the least. This was one of those great films that can have you laughing and crying at the same time. I would also like to thank the film for introducing to me Belle And Sebastian who I'm now obsessed with. I also quite like the fact that they didn't overdramatise the theme of homosexuality, Leo seemed comfortable in his sexuality despite being closeted and that was really nice to see instead of the usual inner turmoil gay characters have which can get tiresome after a while, if you watch lots of things with LGBT characters in which I do. Overall, a lovely little film with nice characters that you should definitely watch to unwind and relax.
I'm not normally into romantic / love movies but I'm so glad I made an exception for this one.The characters are real and the acting is great, especially from Ghilherme Lobo, who is neither blind nor gay.Whilst it may not be ground breaking it is a lighthearted, fun, and very sweet coming of age story. Some of the characters may fit into the normal teen stereotypes but that's real life, show me a movie that doesn't include some stereotypical characters. It really is a gem in a world full of blockbusters, special effects and violence and it will leave you feeling warm and happy.Truly fantastic film!
This film for me was a '1 o'clock in the morning can't sleep must break the boredom' watch. Normally in these instances I'll fall asleep a third of the way through and that'll be that. In this instance however I was mesmerised, I was pulled in and it is so apparent to me now after sleeping on it how much effort the director and producers have put into character development and presentation. This film has an easiness to it, one that allows you to connect and care for the characters. You feel the pain and the angst whilst also enjoying the highs of emotion and joy. Portuguese as the language even adds to the immersion, as an English only speaker I found myself listening heavily on the tone of their voices which allowed an even deeper emotional connection. I was trapped and in a good way. The accompanying background music is subtle and does not distract from the storyline, it instead lightly enhances it and enforces the mood. This film speaks volumes and is a beautiful depiction of what finding love is for an LGBT person, for anyone looking for something else along an LGBT themed love story I heavily advise North Sea Texas. A beautiful presentation of a young love story and an honour to the LGBT community.
The movie has a familiar topic as seen in many recent LGBT movies, thanks to promotion campaigns for LGBT people and the more open social viewpoint. Thus, throughout the movie, people will experience a gentle feeling about life. No scandals, no climax, and just a lovely ending.Stories about student's love often go this way. A new classmate of a boy falls in love with him, and they eventually get together. But it doesn't really mean that you only need to watch some beginning and some ending minutes. The Way He Looks is more special because Leo is a juvenile blind boy who intensely seeks independence to prove that he's not inferior to those normal boys out there. Fate brings Gabriel close to him. No need for special events, just some daily activities at school, and they start to feel for each other. People will enjoy watching Gabriel accompanying his cute friend all the time, to find out that there are chances for them to express their feelings but nothing has been made. The last scene when the boys stay together in Leo's room is so romantic. As mentioned, there are no special things put into the movie, but people will still love the way Gabriel asks Leo, the way Leo touches Gabriel's face and kisses him, the way the boys hug each other, and even their sounds of breathing. No sexual feelings, just a very pure sense of young love.Neither of the boys are very handsome; however, their actions are extremely effective. They express no feminine behaviors, but people can still feel something distinguishable between the boys' roles in their relationship. The director has been so delicate that he deeply understands which kind of spices to mix into the film. The remained feeling after the movie is a lightly impressive happiness. People will remember vaguely that this love is formed by a friendship, and the boys have overcome some small issues to reach to each other. They will love the boys' contribution to each other. Leo is blind, but his heart and his love are so bright.
