I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
The film was only funny for a few moments during the last half hour or so. The humor was pretty dry even for a British comedy. The movie did have potential and could've been great if they had cut down on the overacting and made the humor more subtle, but ultimately it was a pretty big disappointment for me as I had heard nothing but great things about the movie. I'm American with lots of British relatives on my moms side, so I would say I'm very used to hearing and understanding British accents but I had a very hard time understanding the main characters in this movie for a good portion of the film. Overall not enjoyable. I really did want to like this movie just for the fact that it takes the very relevant and controversial issue of terrorism and makes light of it. Don't get me wrong, it does effectively make light of terrorism, but it doesn't make you laugh.
This film gets so many things right. Seems like the writer knows exactly what ails the Muslim society and this movie captures that brilliantly. The modern but Islamist wife, the pious and regressive but non-violent Islamic preacher, the white convert who is more hardcore in his jihad than the others, the run-of-the-mill kebab shop worker who supports jihad, the happy-go-lucky and unsuspecting co-worker from the security agency, the freely mingling drug-addicted white girl. If this isn't piercing satire, I don't know what is. One of the best movies I have ever seen. Also contains some brilliant dialogues like, "Bro, I think I might be confused but I am not sure."
Four British men try to be Islamic jihadists. Omar is anti-modern Western culture. His friend Waj is an idiot. Barry is a bombastic aggressive convert. Faisal has crazy ideas. Omar and Waj go to training camp in Pakistan. Barry's brash public persona attracts new recruit Hassan. Omar and Waj return after accidentally destroying the terrorist camp. The group gathers material to make a bomb. This is essentially The Office with terrorists. Instead of selling paper, they're trying to kill people. Barry is probably the funniest. These characters are outrageous but has a good slice of the truth. It is either cringe-worthy or gut-busting hilarious. If anything, these guys need to push even harder to be outrageous. The deaths don't always help. They're not satiring a zombie movie. This subject is all too real and they need to consider how far from reality this movie should be.
This has got to be one of the most messed up black comedy I have seen so far. And I have seen a lot of messed up comedies. This film has that comedic elements where they put one character in the group that has some common sense around an idiot or idiots that messes it up for the whole group or are used as a plot device to further the gag. This has been done many times in other comedies and it's a plot device that works really well in certain comedies. And for the most part it worked for this one despite it being all messed up and all. I will say I did feel a bit uncomfortable when I got a few chuckles or a laugh out of this one. Despite the offensive content because of the subject matter which revolves around a group of wannabe terrorists that are British Muslims, I found it amusing. Because of the clever scenarios and how ridiculous it is how it all played out. What I didn't like is how most of the civilians and officers give the terrorist group who a chance and treat them like human beings without coming up with assumptions or judging them because of their ethnicity. And the group uses that trust and tries to blow innocent people up regardless. When one of the members in the group gave this rap presentation in one of the scenes about stereotypes and judging someone because of their ethnicity I thought he had a point until you learn that he is actually a part of the terrorist group anyways. This can tick off a lot of viewers that are Muslims that have no intention of going through with terrorist activities or support them in anyway. The might even be Muslims that has no affiliations at all when it comes to jihadists. Benedict Cumberbatch makes a appearance in this before he got his big break as well, although it's for a short bit. When I heard about the premise of this movie, which deals with the most incompetent terrorist group ever. I thought it was going to be another "Tucker & Dale vs. Evil" which is a film that came out on the same year. But it's more like a mix between "The Dictator" and "This Is the End" except way a way lower budget. I think the reason why this comedy didn't get as much recognition is because it didn't have many well known Hollywood actors and because of the content. Although it's more of a film that mocks the terrorist than anything else.7.5/10
