When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
For a modern film, this is full of out of date stereotypes. Why is it perfectly acceptable for a beautiful princess to fall in love with a hideous man, yet there are no stories of handsome men falling for hideous women? All this feeds the stereotypes that females should be pretty, but men can be whatever they want. The only time this is reversed in the film it is used for comedy. If you don't wish for your children to be tainted by this I would avoid.
I thought this movie was absolutely beautiful. Everything from the world they created, to the the emotional developments of the characters. My wife and I kept trying to predict what tropes they might use to convey the story, and to our surprise this movie was creative enough to break the mold on a more traditional story. I had a smile just pasted onto my face for most of the movie (in particular the second half of the movie). The character growth feels genuine, and the characters aren't stereotypical. It's a very heartwarming fantasy that leaves you with some of the feelings you'd have from watching "Megamind", "Willow", and "Frozen" and mashed them up together. There were some visual styles that I typically don't enjoy, but they somehow made them work in the most beautiful way. Ultimately, this movie felt like food for my soul. I strongly recommend it.
I remember when this movie first stirred some interest in development. The idea intrigued me, but the poor reviews and basically no publicity turned me off the film and I never really considered watching it. However, I saw it mentioned on social media and decided to take a look.Best decision ever. It's been two days and I've already watched four times. I can't seem to stop. My first viewing was positive, but I wasn't necessarily wowed, but the songs...they just get stuck into your head. The duet of Strange Magic with Marianne and the Bog King is particularly catchy and beautiful. I found myself rewatching that scene again and again, but then I wound up just rematching the whole film. the more I watched it, the more I loved it.While I would never say any film is perfect and Strange Magic has it's flaws (mainly just side characters in need of more fleshing out and some weaker plot points) but that doesn't outweigh it's good parts. For starters, the animation in this film is incredible. It seems so real at times and the world is absolutely beautiful in its depiction. While some of the secondary characters are weak, the main characters are wonderfully complex. Part of what makes this film so different from other animated films is that their is a history of these characters. You don't normally find in animated films the two main characters each having had past relationships that ended badly and left them vulnerable. The songs are also great. I think some people can be thrown off by the fact that the songs are not original, but it runs in the vein of Mumma Mia and other musicals that feature pop culture hits. I honestly could see Strange Magic being a hit on Broadway since the plot could be drawn out more and even more pop culture songs added to fill in the weaker spots of the film. Bottom line, this is a movie that once you find yourself liking, you get hooked. I can definitely see this turning into a cult classic over time. It already has a pretty passionate fanbase. I highly recommend this movie if you are looking for something fun, a little different, but still enjoyable.
As much as I hate giving bad feedback on my reviews, it saddens me to give this movie a neutral score. While I do understand the target audience is young girls, categorizing this movie to any other Barbie or fairies movies, it still has no excuse for its way of outright making you cringe nonstop. Although my mood was completely killed by the constant musicals from dreadful pop songs -my boyfriend couldn't stand it after 8 minutes into the movie so I was left alone to watch it- the cheesiness and cliché plot, I really enjoyed the graphics, effects, colors, excellent effort put into the backgrounds and animation, all of the characters, the silly humor. I'm really not the type to hate musicals, but this one just annoyed me to the point where I was watching it just out of curiosity. I'm giving this movie a -6, and frankly I would have given it at least an 8 if I didn't grind my teeth every time they started singing.Anyway, I didn't hate it, but I wouldn't watch it again. But if you're the kinda person that really likes musicals and cheesy plots, happy endings, love etc, you'll definitely like this movie! But most of us sourpuss people will have to skip.
